Life University founder recovering from stroke at Grady

by Jon Gillooly

The Marietta Daily Journal

MARIETTA ? Dr. Sid Williams, founder and former president of Life University, is recovering from a stroke at the Marcus Stroke and Neuroscience Center at Grady, Life President Dr. Guy Riekeman said.

Riekeman made the announcement on the university?s Facebook page on Tuesday, where he writes that Williams was hospitalized early Saturday.

?Everyone is expecting the best and that includes the hope that he may be transferred to the rehab center sometime later in the week,? Riekeman said. ?Not much more is known at this time except that, as you would expect, he is ?challenging? the medical doctors and staff to see things differently/Chiropractically.?

Riekeman said the Williams? family has asked that no visits or calls be made at this time.

Dr. Bobby Gise, who started the rugby program at Life in 1980 as a student there and now operates a chiropractic office in Jasper, said he?s been receiving daily reports on Williams? status from his circle of friends.

?I call to get a daily update, and supposedly he?s been progressing surprisingly well,? Gise said. ?I would say he?s recovering nicely.?

Gise said Williams is being looked after by his daughter, Kim, who lives next door to him in Powder Springs.

In an email to the Journal on Wednesday, Riekeman called Williams a charismatic individualist who founded the largest Chiropractic college in the world at a time when anything other than traditional medicine was considered suspect.

?All of us at Life University wish for him a speedy recovery,? Riekeman said. ?If anyone has the grit to fight back, it would certainly be Dr. Williams.?

Williams served as president of Life from 1974 to 2002. His colorful personality continues to mark the campus, particularly at the front gates on Barclay Circle, where a sculpture of his hands, 15-feet tall and cast in bronze, welcome visitors. Another sculpture atop the university?s student center features a bare-chested Native American dancing. Rumor had it when the statue was dedicated in the early 1990s it was meant to resemble Williams.

Baylor vs. Washington LIVE UPDATES: Robert Griffin III Highlights Alamo Bowl

He is asked. "I have no idea," he responds. And he calls the ESPN interrogator "sir" before excusing himself.

He falls to the ground and lays down, face down. But then he pops up and is articulate and confident and just all-around awesome.

Presumably coming from the Baylor band, the Superman theme music can be heard from the Alamodme. One more knee... and...

Griffin takes a knee. One more of those coming.

The clock is ticking under two minutes. Washington is out of timeouts.

Squib kick and big No. 71 comes rushing in to grab football. He fights for extra yards and pops out of pile to keep rumbling ahead. And then he FUMBLES! Baylor recovers. OK. maybe this will do it.

Ganaway breaks through the middle. Again. TOUCHDOWN BAYLOR. Again. Again. Again.

Ganaway runs right, picking up eight. Washington uses second timeout to stop clock. 2:36 remaining.

He skitters through and goes down in bounds. Clock stopped to move chains but starts up. Baylor lets it tick.

Price hit from his right as he set to throw, ball sails out of bounds to far side. Turnover on downs. 1st and 10 and Baylor is back on the ball. 3:20 remaining.

Time: 3:25 remaining Down: 4th Distance: 8

Yard Line: Baylor 39

Washington 56

Baylor 60

Washington calls a timeout.

Confusion over whether Price had a forward or backward pass as it bounces. Whistle dead although players were going for it.

Seems odd. But it leaves Washington facing a 3rd and 8.

After play fake, Price throws low for Aguilar, who dives but can't get a hold on it. 2nd and 10.

Jenkins jumps over defender and reaches out to pull in ball and wrestle it away. 1st at BAY 41.

While he's likely a gregarious fellow, he's shy of first down here. 3rd and 1.

Callier is stonewalled at line. 2nd and 10. Clock down to 5:47. Washington keeping ball on ground, keeping clock moving.

Rush to line out of huddle and Polk runs off right tackle and gets it. 1st and 10.

Speilman has been talking about it being four-down territory even though Wash is deep in their half. Seems a bit much with 6:35 remaning in a four-point game.

Baylor defense makes first contact early but pushes forward. 3rd and 2.

Washington starting at their own 22 with a delayed handoff. Short gain. 2nd and 8.

DISA gets a spoonful of Froyo, approves Dell Venue for military use

Remember when the DoD approved the Android-powered Dell Streak for military use? Well the DISA's latest list of approved gear now includes Dell's Venue and the custom version of Froyo that it runs. Sadly, there are some limitations: operatives won't have access to the Android market, all surfing has to go via a secure proxy server and there's a ban on all classified information being received on the handset. Now if you'll excuse us, we're gonna imagine a unit of Venues at boot camp all chanting "If I play Angry Birds in a combat zone, box me up and send me home."

RockMelt hits beta 5, makes Chome's Omnibox a gateway to Facebook

RockMelt Beta 5
Last year, when RockMelt picked up where Flock left off, deeply tying social services into the browser interface, we were understandably a bit skeptical. But, just over 13 months later the tricked out Chrome variant is still kicking and tacking on new features. The latest beta, version five, turns the Omnibox into a full-fledged Facebook portal, allowing you to upload photos, initiate chats and load profiles without first having to launch the site. The update also sports a spruced up new tab page. We won't spoil all the surprises though, hit up the source link to download it for yourself.

'Anonymous' hackers target US security think tank (AP)

LONDON ? The loose-knit hacking movement "Anonymous" claimed Sunday to have stolen thousands of credit card numbers and other personal information belonging to clients of U.S.-based security think tank Stratfor. One hacker said the goal was to pilfer funds from individuals' accounts to give away as Christmas donations, and some victims confirmed unauthorized transactions linked to their credit cards.

Anonymous boasted of stealing Stratfor's confidential client list, which includes entities ranging from Apple Inc. to the U.S. Air Force to the Miami Police Department, and mining it for more than 4,000 credit card numbers, passwords and home addresses.

Austin, Texas-based Stratfor provides political, economic and military analysis to help clients reduce risk, according to a description on its YouTube page. It charges subscribers for its reports and analysis, delivered through the web, emails and videos. The company's main website was down, with a banner saying the "site is currently undergoing maintenance."

Proprietary information about the companies and government agencies that subscribe to Stratfor's newsletters did not appear to be at any significant risk, however, with the main threat posed to individual employees who had subscribed.

"Not so private and secret anymore?" Anonymous taunted in a message on Twitter, promising that the attack on Stratfor was just the beginning of a Christmas-inspired assault on a long list of targets.

Anonymous said the client list it had already posted was a small slice of the 200 gigabytes worth of plunder it stole from Stratfor and promised more leaks. It said it was able to get the credit card details in part because Stratfor didn't bother encrypting them ? an easy-to-avoid blunder which, if true, would be a major embarrassment for any security-related company.

Fred Burton, Stratfor's vice president of intelligence, said the company had reported the intrusion to law enforcement and was working with them on the investigation.

Stratfor has protections in place meant to prevent such attacks, he said.

"But I think the hackers live in this kind of world where once they fixate on you or try to attack you it's extraordinarily difficult to defend against," Burton said.

Hours after publishing what it claimed was Stratfor's client list, Anonymous tweeted a link to encrypted files online with names, phone numbers, emails, addresses and credit card account details.

"Not as many as you expected? Worry not, fellow pirates and robin hoods. These are just the `A's," read a message posted online that encouraged readers to download a file of the hacked information.

The attack is "just another in a massive string of breaches we've seen this year and in years past," said Josh Shaul, chief technology officer of Application Security Inc., a New York-based provider of database security software.

Still, companies that shared secret information with Stratfor in order to obtain threat assessments might worry that the information is among the 200 gigabytes of data that Anonymous claims to have stolen, he said.

"If an attacker is walking away with that much email, there might be some very juicy bits of information that they have," Shaul said.

Lt. Col. John Dorrian, public affairs officer for the Air Force, said that "for obvious reasons" the Air Force doesn't discuss specific vulnerabilities, threats or responses to them.

"The Air Force will continue to monitor the situation and, as always, take appropriate action as necessary to protect Air Force networks and information," he said in an email.

Miami Police Department spokesman Sgt. Freddie Cruz Jr. said that he could not confirm that the agency was a client of Stratfor, and he said he had not received any information about a security breach involving the police department.

Anonymous also linked to images online that it suggested were receipts for charitable donations made by the group manipulating the credit card data it stole.

"Thank you! Defense Intelligence Agency," read the text above one image that appeared to show a transaction summary indicating that an agency employee's information was used to donate $250 to a non-profit.

One receipt ? to the American Red Cross ? had Allen Barr's name on it.

Barr, of Austin, Texas, recently retired from the Texas Department of Banking and said he discovered last Friday that a total of $700 had been spent from his account. Barr, who has spent more than a decade dealing with cybercrime at banks, said five transactions were made in total.

"It was all charities, the Red Cross, CARE, Save the Children. So when the credit card company called my wife she wasn't sure whether I was just donating," said Barr, who wasn't aware until a reporter with the AP called that his information had been compromised when Stratfor's computers were hacked.

"It made me feel terrible. It made my wife feel terrible. We had to close the account."

Wishing everyone a "Merry LulzXMas" ? a nod to its spinoff hacking group Lulz Security ? Anonymous also posted a link on Twitter to a site containing the email, phone number and credit number of a U.S. Homeland Security employee.

The employee, Cody Sultenfuss, said he had no warning before his details were posted.

"They took money I did not have," he told The Associated Press in a series of emails, which did not specify the amount taken. "I think `Why me?' I am not rich."

But the breach doesn't necessarily pose a risk to owners of the credit cards. A card user who suspects fraudulent activity on his or her card can contact the credit card company to dispute the charge.

Stratfor said in an email to members, signed by Stratfor Chief Executive George Friedman and passed on to AP by subscribers, that it had hired a "leading identity theft protection and monitoring service" on behalf of the Stratfor members affected by the attack. The company said it will send another email on services for affected members by Wednesday.

Stratfor acknowledged that an "unauthorized party" had revealed personal information and credit card data of some of its members.

The company had sent another email to subscribers earlier in the day saying it had suspended its servers and email after learning that its website had been hacked.

One member of the hacking group, who uses the handle AnonymousAbu on Twitter, claimed that more than 90,000 credit cards from law enforcement, the intelligence community and journalists ? "corporate/exec accounts of people like Fox" News ? had been hacked and used to "steal a million dollars" and make donations.

It was impossible to verify where credit card details were used. Fox News was not on the excerpted list of Stratfor members posted online, but other media organizations including MSNBC and Al-Jazeera English appeared in the file.

Anonymous warned it has "enough targets lined up to extend the fun fun fun of LulzXmas through the entire next week."

The group has previously claimed responsibility for attacks on credit card companies Visa Inc. and MasterCard Inc., eBay Inc.'s PayPal, as well as other groups in the music industry and the Church of Scientology.

Northern Nigerian Christians warn of religious war (Reuters)

ABUJA (Reuters) ? Northern Nigerian Christians said on Tuesday they feared that a spate of Christmas Day bombings by Islamist militants that killed over two dozen people could lead to a religious war in Africa's most populous country.

The warning was made in a statement by the northern branch of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), an umbrella organization comprising various denominations including Catholics, Protestant and Pentecostal churches.

The Boko Haram Islamist sect, which aims to impose sharia Islamic law across Nigeria, claimed responsibility for the blasts, the second Christmas in a row it has caused carnage at Christian churches.

Saidu Dogo, secretary general for the organization in Nigeria's 19 northern provinces called on Muslim leaders to control their faithful, saying Christians will be forced to defend themselves against further attacks.

"We fear that the situation may degenerate to a religious war and Nigeria may not be able to survive one. Once again, 'enough is enough!'," Dogo said.

The attacks risk reviving tit-for-tat sectarian violence between the mostly Muslim north and the largely Christian south, which has claimed thousands of lives in the past decade.

Dogo said the CAN was calling on all Christians to continue respecting the law but to defend themselves when needed.

"We shall henceforth in the midst of these provocations and wanton destruction of innocent lives and property be compelled to make our own efforts and arrangements to protect the lives of innocent Christians and peace-loving citizens of this country," Dogo said.

The most deadly attack killed at least 27 people in the St Theresa Catholic church in Madalla, a town on the edge of the capital Abuja, and devastated surrounding buildings and cars as faithful poured out of the church after Christmas mass.

Security forces also blamed the sect for two explosions in the north targeting their facilities. Officials have confirmed 32 people died in the wave of attacks across Nigeria, though local media have put the number higher.

But the church bombs are more worrying because they raise fears that Boko Haram is trying to ignite a sectarian civil war in the nearly 160 million nation split evenly between Christians and Muslims, who for the most part co-exist in peace.

Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has come under pressure to do more fight the growing security threat which risks derailing economic gains in the OPEC member and Africa's top oil-producing nation.

Nigeria's main opposition leader Muhammadu Buhari, a northerner and former military ruler who lost a presidential election in April to Jonathan, accused the government of incompetence on Monday, saying government was slow to respond and had shown indifference to the bombings.

The CAN said in the statement that it was concerned that the perpetrators and their sponsors "are well-known to government and no serious or decisive actions have been taken to stem their nefarious activities."

Packers wrap up top seed

Rodgers throws 5 TDs as Green Bay (14-1) logs 'special' 35-21 victory

By CHRIS JENKINS

updated 11:23 p.m. ET Dec. 25, 2011

GREEN BAY, Wis. - With the first five-touchdown game of his NFL career, Aaron Rodgers ensured that the Green Bay Packers' playoff road will go through Lambeau Field.

He also made sure the rival Chicago Bears will be spending the playoffs at home.

Rodgers broke a close game wide open by leading three quick scoring drives in the second half, and the Packers beat the Bears 35-21 on Sunday night.

Rodgers noted that he once threw six touchdowns in junior college - also in a rivalry game - but acknowledged this one was a little bit bigger.

"Yeah, this one's pretty special," Rodgers said.

With the win, the Packers (14-1) nailed down the No. 1 seed in the NFC and claimed another round of bragging rights in the NFL's most storied rivalry by knocking the Bears out of the playoff chase.

"We wanted the path to go through Lambeau," Packers coach Mike McCarthy said.

Week?16 in the NFL
Down to the wire

????Will Eli and the Giants pull it off? What's with Big Ben? And who's gonna cage the Lions?

Rodgers threw a pair of touchdown passes to Jordy Nelson, another two to James Jones, and found tight end Jermichael Finley for a score. Rodgers was 21 of 29 for 283 yards and five touchdowns with no interceptions when backup Matt Flynn took over for Rodgers with 7:54 left in the game.

Rodgers surpassed Lynn Dickey's single-season franchise record of 4,458 yards passing with one game left, although it's unclear how much Rodgers will play in the Packers' finale against Detroit.

The loss eliminated the Bears (7-8) from playoff contention and put the Atlanta Falcons in the playoffs.

Third-string running back Kahlil Bell rushed for 121 yards for the Bears, who trailed by only four early in the third quarter. But Rodgers drove the Packers for touchdowns on their next three possessions to put the game out of reach.

"When you play the Super Bowl champions, you have to be on top of your game," Bears coach Lovie Smith said. "Offensively, we did enough things to keep us in the game and have a chance to win the game at the end. But defensively we just didn't have it."

McCarthy said the team's run defense will be examined after the big performance by Bell, but added that the final score told the story.

"We won big," McCarthy said. "That's the bottom line."

Chicago came into Sunday on a four-game losing streak and beset by injuries. But the Bears were able to stay in the game with solid defense and tough running by Bell, who started because of injuries to Matt Forte and Marion Barber.

Rodgers' second-half fireworks proved to be too much for Chicago.

"Thirty-five points on that defense, that's a good night," McCarthy said.

The victory was the Packers' fourth over the Bears in 2011. Green Bay also beat Chicago in the 2010 regular-season finale, the NFC Championship game, and at Soldier Field on Sept. 25.

With the Bears trailing 14-3 at halftime, quarterback Josh McCown found Earl Bennett wide open for a 49-yard gain to set up first-and-goal on the 1. Bell fumbled just short of the goal line on the next play but offensive lineman Edwin Williams recovered the ball for a touchdown.

With the Packers nursing a four-point lead, and the Lambeau Field crowd nervously quiet early in the third quarter, Rodgers answered by dropping deep and throwing a rainbow pass to Nelson, who blew through the Chicago secondary and hauled in the ball for a 55-yard touchdown.

Rodgers then showed his running ability on the Packers' next possession, juking his way between Bears linebackers Brian Urlacher and Lance Briggs on a scramble. Rodgers finished the drive with a 7-yard touchdown toss to Jones, giving the Packers a commanding 28-10 lead.

Packers safety Charlie Peprah came up with an interception, and Rodgers found Nelson for another score to give Green Bay a 35-10 lead.

"It just hasn't gone the way we wanted to," Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher said. "If we play like this, that's what's going to happen. The last five weeks, we haven't played well enough to win, and we've lost all five games. We're not real happy where we're at. Our coaches aren't happy, but that's what we get."

McCown finally answered with a 1-yard touchdown pass to tight end Kellen Davis - then drew the ire of the Lambeau crowd by scrambling for a two-point conversion and spiking the ball over the goalpost with his team trailing 35-18.

Rodgers' offensive feats came behind a patchwork offensive line, as the Packers were without three of their top four tackles.

Chad Clifton returned to practice this week after sitting out since October because of hamstring and back injuries, but isn't ready to play. Bryan Bulaga was inactive Sunday because of a left knee sprain, and backup Derek Sherrod is out for the season with a broken right leg.

Green Bay also was missing wide receiver Greg Jennings, because of a sprained left knee, and defensive lineman Ryan Pickett because of a concussion.

The Bears have lost five straight games since losing quarterback Jay Cutler to a broken right thumb in a Nov. 20 victory over San Diego. Chicago was 7-3 after that win, but came into Sunday's game barely alive in the playoff chase.

The Bears started McCown on Sunday after backup Caleb Hanie struggled to fill in for Cutler. McCown's most recent start came with the Oakland Raiders in 2007, and he was out of the NFL last season.

"It's a tough assignment, but you've got to find a way to pull it off," McCown said.

To make matters worse for the Bears' offense, Barber was inactive because of a calf injury. Chicago already was without Forte, who missed his third straight game because of a sprained medial collateral ligament in his right knee.

Notes: Sunday's attendance was 70,574, the team's 300th consecutive sellout, including the playoffs. ... Bears offensive lineman Lance Louis left the game in the first half because of an illness. ... Packers RB James Starks bruised an ankle.

JingXing S7100: an Android tablet for gaming | Ubergizmo

JingXing S7100It looks like the Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY isn?t going to be the dedicated Android gaming device on the block, a company named JingXing has decided to step into that niche with a device of its own: the JingXing S7100. However, the S7100 isn?t a phone and takes the form factor of tablet instead, and features gamepad controls on the sides of the display.

While the specs of the device weren?t revealed, it will be running on Android (as evident by the dedicated Android buttons on the bottom of the device and the Android logo on the back), and will feature a rear camera and a front facing camera. The tablet?s gamepad gives users a 4-way D-pad, 4 regular buttons (circle, triangle, square, x), as well as start and select. No sign of shoulder buttons, so I guess you?ll need to use onscreen controls for those.

Don?t expect to have a dedicated app store like the Xperia PLAY/PlayStation Vita ? but you can be pretty sure that ROM emulators are going to be this tablet?s best friends.?No word on pricing or availability, but we?ll keep you posted if it turns up on this side of the world. It?s always interesting to see tablet manufacturers putting their own spin on Android devices ? with the plethora of tablets available on the market today, they need to find a way to stand out somehow.

The challenging new spin on Rubik?s Cube (Yahoo! News)

IQ Cube adds uneven blocks to the mix, comes in two difficulties

It's a little late to make a?Christmas or Hanukkah gift, but the IQ Cube might be a suitable New Year's present for the puzzle-obsessed people in your life. You know, the ones that are always telling you that their?Rubik's Cube is just way too easy?

By eschewing the traditional 3x3x3 layout of cubes that comprise the iconic 1980s era toy, this unofficial successor features either?3x3x7 or?3x3x9 pieces, depending on how much of a challenge you want. While apparently the same physical size as a standard Rubik's Cube, these puzzles feature more rows of blocks that are very thin, thus creating many times the number of possible solutions.

The two "super cubes" are a bit pricey at $27 each, but there could always be some endorsement money for becoming the world record holder in solving one of these devious devices. Just do expect to be as fast as?Feliks Zemdegs, the current Rubik's Cube world record holder ? he can solve the traditional 3x3x3 puzzle in just 5.66 seconds.

Egypt rejects "interference" after Clinton remarks (Reuters)

CAIRO (Reuters) ? Egypt said Wednesday it would not accept any interference in its internal affairs, following criticism by U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton of the way security forces dealt with women protesters.

In a speech Monday, Clinton criticized the actions of Egyptian security forces as showing "systematic degradation" of women that "disgraces the state," some of the strongest U.S. language used against Egypt's new rulers.

Footage showed Egyptian soldiers beating protesters with batons, often after they had fallen to the ground, in what activists described as a forcible attempt to clear a sit-in demanding a swifter transfer to civilian rule. Five days of clashes since Friday left at least 13 dead and hundreds wounded.

"Egypt does not accept any interference in its internal affairs," the state news agency quoted Foreign Minister Mohamed Kamel Amr as saying.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Amr Rushdi told Reuters Egypt held frequent talks with other countries about its transition from military to civilian rule, "to clarify the reality on the ground and the obstacles facing the country during this transitional phase."

A video of Egyptian soldiers dragging a woman protester on the ground by her black full-body veil, exposing her bra, then clubbing and kicking her, has sparked outrage. Thousands marched on Tahrir Square Tuesday to condemn the attacks.

Activists have called for a major protest Friday to demand an apology for the attacks on women.

The United States, which saw deposed leader Hosni Mubarak as a staunch ally, gives Cairo $1.3 billion a year in military aid, a commitment that began after Egypt in 1979 became the first Arab state to make peace with Israel.
