Managing Migraine and Tension Headache - Health

Migraine & tension headache are some of the common causes of time off from work leading to decreased productivity. Neck pain and muscle tension are common symptoms of a migraine attack. Now it is well recognized that headache can be a manifestation of neck disorders. For many people, headache starts as pain or tension at the top of the neck. As the pain worsens, it may spread to the back of the head, temples, forehead, or behind the eyes.

Cervicogenic headache is a syndrome characterized by pain in the head referred from the soft tissues or bony structures in the neck. This happens because the nerves in the upper part of your neck are connected to the nerves in your head and face. The symptoms of tension type headache and migraine are similar to cervicogenic headache thus distinguishing them can be difficult. However, the headache as a result of migraine and from the neck can co exist in an individual. When treating a headache most people will reach for painkillers. Traditional headache management comes from paracetamol, aspirin or ibuprofen. However, persistent or chronic headache may require an alternative treatment.

Is your headache coming from the neck?

• You sit in awkward postures for the most part of the day.
• Your headache develops when you are sitting in such postures.
• Neck movements increase your headache.
• You have a long standing neck pain.
• There is stiffness in your neck.
• Your neck movements are not free, and you feel the range of your neck movements is reduced.
• Headache which always feels worse on the same side of your head.
• Moderate nonthrobbing pain usually starting from the neck.
• Headache is associated with lightheadedness or dizziness.
• Headache eased by pressure to the base of the skull.
• There is only marginal effect of drugs you have been taking for migraine.
• If you fall in 3 or more of the following categories then there are chances that your headache is coming from your neck. Also, migrainous and cervicogenic headache (arising from the neck) can co exist.

Managing Migraine and Tension Headache.

• Watch your posture at work - sitting in an upright posture with chin tucked in, feet supported firmly on ground and shoulders held back is extremely important. Poking chin increases pressure on the nerves in the cervical spine and thus causing headache.
• Take frequent breaks - maintaining a posture for a long time stresses the muscles and joints of that area. Thus after sitting for a long time take a walk which would relax the muscles, decreasing the chances of developing headache while at work.
• Regular exercise - walking, jogging, swimming, cycling improve blood circulation, wash away toxins and other pain causing metabolites and thus restoring a state of health. Flexibility exercises ? sitting in one posture for most part of the day leads to tightness in the neck muscles. These tight muscles then increase the pressure on the nerves causing headache. Thus a program of stretching these tight muscles is effective in reducing the chances of developing neck pain and thus headache.
• Strengthening exercises - for the muscles around the neck, scapula, and shoulders are effective in distributing the loads and thus reducing the stresses on the neck.
• Musculoskeletal treatment ? this involves ?hands on? treatment, mobilization of joints to increase the mobility of joints in the neck, thus reducing the incidence of headache. Soft tissue manipulation hands on treatment to relax the tight musculature and increase the length of soft tissues around the neck.
• Gentle neural mobilization - increases the mobility of the nerves around the neck thus reducing any excessive tension around the neck area. Mobility exercises for the neck help in maintaining and enhancing the range of motion around the neck, decreasing stiffness and thus chances of headache.
• Electrotherapy - use of various electrical modalities is helpful in management of acute symptoms. Relaxation techniques ? breathing exercises, Jacobson?s progressive relaxation techniques help in reducing stress and tension. This leads to enhanced psychological and social well being.
• Reiki - A spiritual healing method helps in positively energizing the body, thus restoring a state of healthy body, mind and spirit.

Cervicogenic headache is a relatively common cause of chronic headache that is often misdiagnosed or unrecognized. A multidisciplinary approach to treatment is the most effective way of dealing with such problems. Migraine and tension headaches can also relieve from physiotherapy by relaxing the muscles around the neck.

Joe Solmonese: Some Questions for NOM's Brian Brown

Dear Mr. Brown:

With this week's court-ordered release of previously classified NOM strategy documents, there are way more questions than answers. I know that you're one to keep your cards pretty close to the vest and that you aren't likely to spill the beans on any number of questions, but I'd like to pose a few queries nonetheless.

First, how can you think you're winning when the American people are so clearly moving toward fairness? You write that "victory is possible, even likely..." Before you get too far ahead of yourself, you should take a look at a few non-partisan public polls (like Gallup for instance) that shows majority support for equal marriage. And don't forget young people where support is off the charts and nothing indicates that as that cohort ages they'll suddenly be inclined to reverse their support for marriage.

Where are all of these supposedly unhappy kids of gay parents? I've got to be honest, one of the most bizarre parts of these documents was your goal of paying an outreach coordinator to find kids of gay parents to speak on camera. Aside from how patently offensive that is, how'd it turn out? My guess is that you didn't have a lot of takers?

Does Mitt Romney buy into your strategy of racial division, rebuffing disclosure laws and lying about people of faith? You are clear about your close working relationship with Rick Santorum, but Mitt Romney has also signed your horrendous pledge to fight against equal marriage and investigate your made up harassment. Has Romney signed on to your agenda lock, stock and barrel?

Will you continue to insist that you're more than just a front for a small cabal of donors? You take great pains to paint yourselves as a large grassroots force but everything suggests the opposite. Five mega-donors make up 88% of your funding. And your bus tour not only failed to turn out more than a handful of supporters at each stop. Where are the teeming masses you insist exist?

Do you think all the resources you've put into places like New Hampshire and New York to stop marriage have been a waste? In 2009 you said you had budgeted $2 million for New Hampshire but even with a solidly Republican majority legislature, just last week they decided to keep their equal marriage law in place.

Why didn't you establish a federal PAC? You clearly planned to back in 2009 but that seems never to have materialized. Is it that federal election law would have required that you disclose who gave money to it?

How can you say you're solely focused on marriage when you tout the work of your American Principles Project? As part of your self-described strategy toward "winning the marriage battle" you discuss efforts to "expose Obama as a social radical... raise issues such as pornography" and wade into keeping open the Guantanamo prison and opposing the President's appointees. What does that have to do with marriage again?

Do you wish you spent more than $50K on the "Expert Witness Project"? You say you want to help nurture intellectuals and scholars but you don't have much to show for it. Would it have been worth it for you to invest more so that in the Prop 8 trial for example, the one so-called expert did more to help our case than your own?

Why are you hell-bent on avoiding campaign disclosure laws? Aside from going to court to keep your dealings in the shadows (which, you have to appreciate the irony of a court forcing these strategy documents released, no?) you brags that "one key advantage we now have is the capacity to protect the identity of our donors." Then you also encourage donors to give to a slush fund for use around the country saying, "It is critical that we have a reserve fund to give to these efforts to ensure victory and protect donor identity." What is it that you'd go to such great lengths to hide?

Brian, I look forward to your thorough answers to these questions. Maybe over a coffee at Starbucks? I'll wait patiently...

German firms halt UK nuclear plan

There has been a setback to the government's plan to attract investment in new nuclear power stations.

Two key players, RWE Npower and E.On, have announced they will not develop new nuclear power projects in the UK.

The two were planning to invest in new plants in Anglesey and Oldbury-on-Severn, near Bristol, under a joint venture called Horizon Nuclear Power.

The government says it is disappointed but there remains "considerable interest" in the project.

The firms blamed problems raising finance for power projects and costs associated with decommissioning nuclear power plants in Germany.

They formed Horizon Nuclear Power, based in Gloucester, in 2009.

It was working on plans for new nuclear power stations at Wylfa on the Isle of Anglesey and at Oldbury-on-Severn in South Gloucestershire.

They are two of eight new projects named by the government to replace old power plants which are due to close by the end of the decade, and which make up about a quarter of the UK's generating capacity.

But last May Germany decided to close down its nuclear power stations by 2022, following the disaster at Japan's Fukushima nuclear facility.

For RWE and E.On, which own most of Germany's power stations, it was an expensive decision and undermined their enthusiasm to invest in nuclear power elsewhere.

"It's a big deal that they are pulling out," Malcolm Grimston, an associate fellow at the Chatham House think tank, told BBC News.

"If you look at the utilities in Europe then they are two of the biggest. There aren't that many huge players out there who could take over."

RWE and E.On want to find another company, or consortium, to take over the project.

Volker Beckers, chief executive of RWE Npower, said: "We continue to believe that nuclear power has an important role to play in the UK's future energy mix.

"We are therefore looking to ensure that work on development, including grid connection, can be taken up quickly by other potential investors."

Energy Minister Charles Hendry said: "E.On and RWE's withdrawal is clearly very disappointing, but the partners have clearly explained that this decision was based on pressures elsewhere in their businesses and not any doubts about the role of nuclear in the UK's energy future.

"The government's framework for electricity market reform must ensure we have a project which is good for consumers, policy-makers, jobs and investors," said Vincent de Rivaz, chief executive of EDF Energy.

Analysts are now questioning whether firms can make money out of nuclear power in the UK.

The move by the German firms follows the decision last September by Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) to pull out of a deal to develop a new nuclear power station.

The energy company sold its 25% stake in NuGeneration to partners GDF Suez and Iberdrola.

It said it wanted to focus on renewable energy, as do its German rivals.

RWE says it will continue to invest in low carbon technologies. It has also invested ?1.6bn in gas-fired power stations in the UK.

E.On says it will concentrate on projects with quicker results than nuclear, which takes 10 years to start generating electricity.

The future of nuclear power may become clearer in May when the government announces its plan to reform the energy market.

Measures will be introduced to encourage investment and create a balanced range of electricity sources.

BBC business editor Robert Peston says sources at the energy companies describe this as "a make-or-break decision" as to whether the government is prepared to abandon its previous position that there won't be any substantial subsidies for nuclear, either from taxpayers or customers.

Labour stressed that nuclear power was vital to "to make us less reliant on volatile fossil fuel prices, increase our energy security, and keep prices down for families".

"RWE and E.On's decision... underscores the importance of the government's electricity market reform delivering a framework that will provide certainty and confidence for other potential investors," said Caroline Flint, shadow energy and climate change secretary.

Greenpeace's policy director Doug Parr said: "The government's energy strategy is crumbling.

"Not even the billions of pounds of taxpayers' money they have offered as incentives to the German and French nuclear industry are enough to make a new generation of power stations economically viable."

'A shambles'

Unions have been highly critical of government policy as well.

Gary Smith from the union GMB, which represents workers in the nuclear industry, told the BBC: "I think it is clear, the government's energy policy is in absolute tatters. It's a shambles.

"Britain is being left as an also-ran in the energy market internationally and the nuclear specifically."

According to the union, Unite, the proposed nuclear power station at Wylfa could generate 5,000 jobs on Anglesey and support jobs at the Springfields fuel plant in central Lancashire.

The Prospect union, which represents some of the 120 highly-skilled employees working at Horizon's headquarters in Gloucester, as well as staff at the existing Wylfa site, expressed concern about the broader economic consequences.

"At a time when we face the closure of several large coal-fired power stations between now and the end of 2015, the Horizon venture was to be a major contributor in achieving a new UK fleet of nuclear power stations to provide a secure low-carbon energy supply for the future," said Mike Clancy, general secretary-designate of Prospect.

Happy customers are returning customers, and we all know that returning customers generate more revenue for your company! Providing great customer service can be what separates you from your competitors. Here are five tips on how to not only keep your customers happy, but also keep them coming back.
1.) Keep your promises to all customers ? Make sure processing and shipping time frames are accurate. If an item on your site states it will ship within 1-2 business days, make sure it?s shipped within that promised time frame. Of course we know that stock issues may arise; if they do just make sure you keep your customers in the loop.
2.) Communicate ? This is essential to keeping customers happy and it goes back to the first tip- if an item is out of stock or on back order, let your customers know. If you use a call center or answering service to take your overflow calls, make it a priority to respond to your customers in a timely manner. Email is always the quickest way to contact a customer and the best option because you will have your communication in writing. Because we live in a fast-paced, technology-driven society, customers expect quick and efficient responses when dealing with online stores. Therefore, try to get back to customers within 1-2 business days, with one business day being the ideal time frame for a response. You don?t want to have customers calling in every few days because they have not heard back from you. This will lead to high phone costs and a bad experience for the customer?which means your customer loses, and so does your business. 3.) Give an incentive ? To ensure your customers return, offer a coupon for their next order, even if it?s only 5 to 10 percent off or free shipping on orders over $50 or more. The smallest offer can keep customers coming back for more business. You can also offer coupons or discounts throughout the month.
4.) Be competitive ? If a competitor is offering free shipping or is selling an item at lower cost, match the price. Customers are more likely to do business with companies they are familiar with or those they are loyal to; however, if a competitor has the same item at a lower cost, a customer may take their business elsewhere. By price matching an order you can gain a sale and perhaps a lifelong customer.
5.) Empathize ? Customers may become upset for numerous reasons. Even if those reasons seem trivial, empathize with the customer. Customers want to feel as if they matter to your company. If they are unhappy, apologize and let them know you understand how they feel and will do whatever you can to make them happy. Nothing turns business away like a cold shoulder!

These may seem like common-sense tips; however, with the hectic schedule of the average business owner, these tips can be forgotten or pushed aside, which can result in unhappy customers and a loss in profit. By making these tips your customer service ?commandments,? you?ll be sure not only to remember them but also to keep those customers coming back.

Fertility and Breast Cancer | Boston Bakes for Breast Cancer

I think that one of the greatest challenges of having breast cancer in my 20s is the issue of fertility. I was never one of those girls who dreamed of being a wife and mother. I was more focused on finding a career I loved and having fun with my friends. In my teens, I was convinced I would never have children and then when I was in my early 20s, it definitely wasn?t a priority. Because I was diagnosed around the same time I met my now husband, the decision about whether or not to have children is very confusing.

Since there are so few cases of breast cancer in women young enough to have not yet had children, the data on whether pregnancy can increase risk of recurrence is inconclusive, at least according to my oncologists. Logically, it would seem to me that since I had an estrogen-receptor positive tumor, pregnancy would not be the wisest choice. I also chose to freeze my eggs before chemotherapy, just in case, so I could always choose to have a surrogate carry my baby. And of course, there is always adoption.

Marc and I don?t know if we want to have children. We?ve been married a year and a half, and are in our early 30s. If I hadn?t had breast cancer, I don?t think I would stress about this. We could decide in a year or two (or five) to try to start a family. However, under these circumstances, it seems like the choice is so much harder. Neither of us is particularly comfortable with the idea of my carrying a pregnancy because of the perceived risk of recurrence. This is in addition to the fibroid issue I have, and also the fact that I am on tamoxifen and would have to wait two more years at least before getting pregnant to avoid birth defects caused by this drug.

For adoption, and even surrogacy, planning is important and long wait time is to be expected. I feel like I would need to decide right now to start the process of adoption or surrogacy to be a parent within five years. Obviously there are never any guarantees with natural conception, but these factors make the process seem tedious and exhausting for both my husband and I. And there is also the financial burden of adoption and surrogacy. We wonder if our circumstances were different if we would think differently about having children, or if our hesitation would have been there anyway. We can?t know of course, and I am left feeling unsure and confused. As Scarlett O?Hara would say, I?ll think about?that tomorrow.

A Note of Grace in Sugarhill Gang?s Sad, Angry Film | Urban Faith

There is a surprising grace note in an angry new documentary about the pioneering hip-hop group, The Sugarhill Gang.

It?s been more than 30 years since a trio of young men from Englewood, New Jersey, recorded the first cross-over hip-hop hit, ?Rapper?s Delight.? After a drawn-out legal battle with their former record label, Sugar Hill Records, two members of the original Sugarhill Gang, Mike ?Wonder Mike? Wright and Guy ?Master Gee? O?Brien, have teamed up with Henry ?Hen Dogg? Williams in a group named for the Sugarhill Gang?s one big hit. The band?s evolution and protracted legal fight is the subject of a new Roger Paradiso documentary called I Want My Name Back.

I saw the film and a brief Rapper?s Delight performance at the Garden State Film Festival in Asbury Park, New Jersey, March 24. It?s a bitter film about how record label owners Sylvia Robinson, her husband Joe Robinson, and their sons allegedly defrauded the group members financially and then trademarked the name Sugarhill Gang and the stage names ?Wonder Mike? and ?Master Gee.? After Wright and O?Brien left the record label, the Robinson?s son Joe Jr. actually began performing as ?Master Gee? with remaining original member Henry ?Big Bank Hank? Franklin.

In the film, O?Brien says the Robinsons didn?t seem like crooks to him at first, in part because Sylvia Robinson was going to Bible studies when they met and ?praising the Lord.?

Williams, who was a former producer at the now defunct Sugar Hill Records, says, ?Big Joe was a crook, but he was an honest crook.? He would tell artists ?straight up? what he was going to take from them.

O?Brien says he descended into a ?deep state of violent depression? and began using drugs after parting ways with the Robinsons over their alleged thievery. He sold magazines door-to-door and says that helped him emerge from the depths. Because his anger isn?t as raw as Wright?s in the film, I thought perhaps faith or a 12-step program had played a role in his recovery. I was wrong.

?I did it myself,? O?Brien told UrbanFaith. ?I just walked away from it. It didn?t benefit me. It made me worse, and in the situation, there was enough bad going around so I didn?t want to add to the equation.?

?I believe in the power of positive thinking and self-improvement,? he said. ?I trained my brain and I maintained a really positive attitude. I looked at every adversity as a seed to an equal and greater benefit. That just gave me the opportunity to become stronger than whatever it was.?

Wright struggled with diabetes and asthma after he left the band and the record label, but he also started a successful painting business, got married, had children, and later divorced. He returned to the Sugar Hill label from 1994 to 2005, but says in the film that those years were ?the dumbest years of my life.?

Perhaps this explains why the vitriole Wright hurls at Joe Robinson Jr. and Jackson is so aggressive and bitter. He gave the label a second chance and felt like he got burned again. He calls his former bandmate ?gutless? and ?heartless? in the film for not leaving with him.

But in 2000, when Joe Robinson Sr. was on his deathbed, Wright went to visit him in the hospital. Amidst all the anger and accusations in the film, I was surprised to hear him say he went there to pray with Robinson. I asked him about this after the screening and concert. He said he was able to pray with the man who had done him so much harm because ?He [Christ] loved us first before we loved Him, and because He said, ?God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son.? He forgave the people. He said, ?Father, forgive them because they know not what they do.? How many times do we forgive somebody? Seven times? No. Seventy times seven. And it?s grace. Grace can?t be earned. It?s mercy. Mercy has to be shown in unruliness.?

Wright then recounted the story of God?s mercy in delivering the Israelites on the banks of the Red Sea and with manna and a pillar of fire despite their complaining.

He said it was the ?prayer of salvation? that he prayed with Robinson.

?I was hoping that he made that move because what they did to us was absolutely terrible?it can?t be overlooked, but eternity is eternity. This is for a small season, and it was really wrong, but you have to overlook that when you?re feet are on the edge of going over to the other side. So, I had to throw all that out the window. And, it really wasn?t hard when it came down to that. When it comes down to crossing over, we?re all one heartbeat, we?re all one breath away from eternity,? he said.

Wright is a person of faith, he said, but he doesn?t want to ?put walls? around himself or ?any kind of bondage? because ?there?s freedom in Christ.?

?I want my priorities to be changed,? he said.

It was perhaps a necessary qualification because forgiveness, mercy, and an eternal perspective don?t come through in this film at all. But when he was introducing the band?s song, ?I Want My Name Back,? during the concert he said the song and the film were ?cathartic? for him. Thirty years worth of frustration and anger spill out on screen. Even after Wright and O?Brien reunited, Joe Robinson Jr. allegedly tried to sabotage their careers.

O?Brien told me the film was cathartic for him too, but said he has never seen it in its entirety. ?For me, it?s just a little eerie, so I kind of take it in bits and pieces,? he said.

The music Rapper?s Delight performed was ?clean? and upbeat. As someone who is far from being a rap aficionado, I thought perhaps I was guilty of stereotyping a genre, but in an interview with NPR Wright said the group?s message ?wasn?t too heavy? and that what he ?wanted to portray was three guys having fun.? This, music historians say, is why ?Rapper?s Delight? was a such a big hit.

?When we strike up [Rapper's Delight], the audience goes crazy 100 percent of the time,? Wright recently told The New York Times. ?That?s love,? he said. ?That?s appreciation. I?ll never take it for granted.?

Why is it that we expect perfect consistency from people of faith? While I can?t imagine myself publicly expressing the kind of raw, intensely personal anger that Wright expresses in this film, I?ve certainly felt it and communicated it in private, and I?ve never had my public identity stolen. Who knows what I would say and do if someone did that to me?

Here are some ideas that I am craving but not sure if it would work LOL. Hopefully it would.

Ideas:
1. She's the daughter of a rich couple while her Momma served their family. Then one morning her Momma no longer woke up. The family decided to take her under their wing, paying for her education. She insisted on working for everything and the rich couple finally decided they'd accept it. She was 10 then and the rich girl was the same age, over the summer they became playmates and every summer the rich family would spend their vacation in their summer house in her town and she serves them. The when she was 15, the rich daughter didn't come back for that summer. 2 years later, she's 17 and a hopeful news of her summer best friend will be paying a visit. Without her parents this time and instead she would be accompanied by her high school friends who are rich as well. Will the rich daughter still notice her presence or just treat her as a mere servant?

2. She was the typical debutante, her parents raised her to be one of the finest women while he (can be a girl and friendship forms) works a few jobs to support his/her art (either music or drawing or writing). What will happen once their paths cross? (This can be have either an 1800s setting or a present time setting).

3. Two cousins who were born in New York are forced to spend a few days before Halloween in the small town their parents grew up, there they realized the have always been a descendant of witches.

4. They are email pals and one summer they've decided to finally meet personally. The decided to spend the break in Florida and can't wait for the adventure they'd experience. (This can be girlxboy or girlxgirl)

5. Any other realistic or paranormal ideas you'd want to RP of course (I'm open for discussions and suggestions Love!) :)

My pet peeves:
1. Totally ignoring our RP just because you prefer your other RPs
2. Making a writer's block an excuse- if you don't have any idea or is bored with RP might as well say it directly! I have no time to wait on someone who's not interested.
3. Uber and massive grammar fails- seriously! I can let a few typos pass but not incorrect grammar in every sentence.
4. Leaving our RP without saying why or even bothering to send a PM that you'll leave.
5. GOD MODDING! Again I am open for discussions if you have an idea, PM me and we can work on that scene or setting!

Chapter 13 Bankruptcy: Retrieving Your Vehicle After Repossession ...

Upon filing Chapter 13 Bankruptcy, the court supervised repayment plan, an Automatic Stay is immediately imposed. ?The Automatic Stay prohibits creditors from further collection activity beyond the bankruptcy filing. ?

This means that all collection activity must immediately stop, including the auction sale of a repossessed vehicle.?

Once a vehicle is repossessed, the vehicle owner has a limited amount of time in which to redeem it. ?In most instances that redemption period is 21 days from the time of repossession, before the vehicle is sold at auction.

In most instances, the finance company will allow the repossessed vehicle to be ?redeemed? so long as the outstanding balance is satisfied. ?In some other instances, the finance company may require that the arrears plus a security payment equal to about 2 to 3 months of future payments be secured as well. ?

If the vehicle cannot be redeemed by satisfying the arrears, then a chapter 13 bankruptcy filing can address the outstanding balance in an extended payment plan. ??

Retrieving the Seized Vehicle

After filing the chapter 13 papers, a filing receipt is generated b the court. The filing receipt provides critical information for creditors about the bankruptcy filing. ?The filing receipt also contains language admonishing creditors of potential penalties for failing to observe the "Stay".

The filing receipt should be promptly forwarded to the finance company to alert them that the Automatic Stay is in place and of their obligation cease the vehicle liquidation.

Upon receiving the notice of the chapter 13 filing, the finance company must release the vehicle to its owner, provided the proper documents are produced, such as proof of insurance.?

The vehicle will likely be stored in a storage yard associated with the repossession agent that seized the vehicle. ?The finance company sill instruct the storage yard to release possession of the vehicle pursuant to the chapter 13 filing and court imposed Automatic Stay.?

Storage yard related fees should be anticipated and included into the chapter 13 plan for repayment over the 3 to 5 year payment period allowed by the plan.

Retrieving the vehicle after filing chapter 13 bankruptcy does not ensure that it cannot seized without condition. ?If the terms of the chapter 13 payment plan is breached, then the vehicle can once again be repossessed by the finance company.

Obama urges N. Korea to "pursue peace"

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? In a direct challenge to North Korean leaders, President Barack Obama implored them "to have the courage to pursue peace" while warning of the wrath of the world if they don't. Failure, he said, would mean a future without dignity, respect or hope for its people.

Obama stood by his pledge for a globe without nuclear weapons, declaring flatly that the United States has more than it needs and can cut its arsenal without weakening its security or that of its allies. That assessment put him on a collision course with congressional Republicans who say any significant cuts would undermine the U.S. ability to deter aggression.

In unusually personal terms, Obama said he spoke of his wish for further nuclear reductions as the president of the only nation ever to use nuclear weapons, as a commander whose country's nuclear codes are never far from his side, and as a protective father eager to erase the threat of nuclear annihilation.

Obama and other world leaders are in Seoul for a major international nuclear security summit. Obama plans to meet on the sidelines of the summit with several heads of government, including Russian and Chinese leaders.

Obama spoke most directly to North Korea's leaders, saying the internationally isolated country needs to change its ways because continuing down the same path will lead to "more broken dreams" and "more isolation." His blunt remarks came a day after he visited the Demilitarized Zone between North and South Korea and described the experience as akin to witnessing a "time warp" of despair.

"By now it should be clear," he said. "Your provocations and pursuit of nuclear weapons have not achieved the security you seek, they have undermined it. Instead of the dignity you desire, you are more isolated."

The nuclear summit unfolded as North Korea prepared for an announced satellite launch next month that the United States says amounts to a test of its rocketry.

As Obama spoke of peace, tensions rose in the Korean peninsula. Seoul warned it might shoot down the North Korean rocket if it violates South Korean territory.

Speaking at Hankuk University, Obama said that the international community has made progress in reducing the threat of nuclear material but says "we're under no illusions."

"Even as we have more work to do, we can already say with confidence that we have more nuclear weapons than we need," he said. "I firmly believe that we can ensure the security of the United States and our allies, maintain a strong deterrent against any threat, and still pursue further reductions in our nuclear arsenal."

Obama also reiterated his warning to Iran, which the U.S. and its allies contend is defying its international obligations by pursuing an illicit nuclear program. Obama said he would discuss Iran in meetings later in the day with the leaders of Russia and China.

"Iran's leaders must understand that there is no escaping the choice before it. Iran must act with the seriousness and sense of urgency that this moment demands," Obama said. "Iran must meet its obligations."

Facing down Iran and North Korea, Obama said a "new international norm" was emerging to deal with the two nations' intransigence. "Treaties are binding. Rules will be enforced. And violations will have consequences," Obama said. "Because we refuse to consign ourselves to a future where more and more regimes possess the world's most deadly weapons."

Obama said the U.S. was also moving forward with Russia to eliminate enough plutonium for about 17,000 nuclear weapons and turn it into electricity. And he heralded an earlier agreement with Russia to reduce nuclear arsenals under the New START Treaty, which Obama called "the most comprehensive arms control agreement in nearly two decades."

"When we're done, we'll have cut American and Russian deployed nuclear warheads to their lowest levels since the 1950s," he said.

Obama also prodded Russia in a new way, saying he would seek discussions with Moscow on an unprecedented front: reducing not only strategic nuclear warheads, but also tactical weapons and warheads in reserve. He said he planned to discuss that proposition with Putin when they meet in May.

Obama was to meet later Monday with outgoing Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. Former leader Vladimir Putin returns to the presidency later this spring after winning an election held earlier this year.

Disgusting? Not to the Sardinians who find it delicious with a nice strong glass of red wine. And it?s the same for many other sights, sounds and smells: What?s disgusting is in the queasy stomach of the beholder. Herz, a research psychologist specializing in the sense of smell, set out to understand the science behind disgust after being tapped to judge the National Rotten Sneakers Contest in Montpelier, Vt., and finding it not as bad as she had expected. She becomes the reader?s brave guide to all kinds of topics that are normally avoided.

First Herz surveys what kinds of things disgust people, and then she tries to explain why by exploring disgust?s physiological basis (people with damage to some brain areas don?t feel it, for example) and behavioral research on how people develop and respond to disgust.

Disgust is the only basic emotion that is largely learned (young children don?t feel or recognize it), and Herz argues that it may be the most recently evolved. Disgust, research suggests, evolved from fear and took hold because of its ability to help protect people from their top predators, pathogens. From there, it has been elaborated upon by associations and connections in the brain, such that today all sorts of violations (ketchup on ice cream) can trigger disgust. But these feelings can be harnessed, Herz says, and in the end her lesson on disgust has a lot to say about how we as humans feel about ourselves.

U.S. Underestimates Long-Term Costs of Obesity, Experts Say

WEDNESDAY, March 21 (HealthDay News) -- The costs of the obesity epidemic to the United States and the economic value of curbing it are not captured fully by current methods, according to a new report.

The problem is that estimates used by Congress when it looks at these issues project out only 10 years, while it may take much longer than that for complications of obesity, such as diabetes and heart disease, to manifest, the report authors say.

For example, "a person with diabetes is not going to go on dialysis right away. They're going to go on dialysis 10 to 12 years after their diagnosis," said Michael O'Grady, co-author of the report, released Wednesday by the Campaign to End Obesity.

A 25-year window for making policy decisions would be more appropriate when drafting policies aimed at curbing disease, he said at a Wednesday morning press conference.

By the same token, measures to prevent obesity can take 20 or more years, perhaps even generations, to show their promise, the report said. A wider time window would enable policy makers to assess the cost-effectiveness of preventive programs, the report noted.

"Interventions aimed at children will not have their full payoff until those children are adults," said Dr. James Marks, senior vice president and director of the Health Group at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, which funded the study.

Nor will the success of interventions aimed at pregnant women be seen for many years, noted the study's authors, speaking at the briefing.

O'Grady, citing current CDC figures, said more than one-third of U.S. adults are overweight, another one-third are obese and 6 percent are extremely obese.

"That's right around three-quarters of the population," said O'Grady, a senior fellow for health care research at the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago and a principal with O'Grady Health Policy, LLC.

One estimate puts the annual cost of obesity at $147 billion, representing almost 10 percent of all medical expenses, the report said. But the Society of Actuaries -- which adds in lost productivity, employees on full disability and absenteeism -- puts the costs closer to $300 billion a year.

And at a minimum, the Congressional Budget Office predicts that per-person, obesity-related spending will increase an average of 3.6 percent a year, the report said.

The authors are asking those who make up budgets, including the Congressional Budget Office, to take into account a growing body of scientific literature on the toll of diabetes as well as hopeful interventions when they tally the price of obesity.

A window of 25 years will help policy makers arrive at more accurate long-term estimates, they said.

"Ten years is adequate for food stamps and aircraft carriers, but there are certain policy areas where we know the disease has a 20- to 25-year progression. You need the flexibility to go beyond 10 years," O'Grady said. "We probably want to modify the status quo of how we measure these things in order to capture the full value of that."

Marks said two of the greatest challenges the nation faces are restoring global economic competitiveness and the skyrocketing costs of medical care, which has become perhaps the biggest obstacle to long-term economic strength.

"Obesity lies right at the center of those challenges," he said. "The way Congress acts to score legislation, using only a 10-year horizon, misses a huge part of the value of preventive efforts."

The authors served in the George W. Bush administration. O'Grady was assistant secretary of Health and Human Services, and co-author James Capretta served as an associate director of the Office of Management and Budget.

People with autism possess greater ability to process information, study suggests

ScienceDaily (Mar. 22, 2012) ? People with autism have a greater than normal capacity for processing information even from rapid presentations and are better able to detect information defined as 'critical', according to a study published March 22 in the Journal of Abnormal Psychology. The research may help to explain the apparently higher than average prevalence of people with autism spectrum disorders in the IT industry.

Autism is a lifelong developmental disorder that affects social interaction, communication and, often, learning; however, people with autism show an increased ability to focus attention on certain tasks. Yet clinical reports backed up by some laboratory research show that these individuals can be more sensitive to the distracting effects of irrelevant stimuli, such as flashing lights or particular sounds, which can be easily ignored by people without the disorder.

Professor Nilli Lavie, from the Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience at UCL, hypothesises that this combination of the ability to focus and a susceptibility to distraction might be caused by a higher than normal information processing capacity.

"Our work on perceptual capacity in the typical adult brain suggests a clear explanation for the unique cognitive profile that people with autism show," she says. "People who have higher perceptual capacity are able to process more information from a scene, but this may also include some irrelevant information which they may find harder to ignore. Our research suggests autism does not involve a distractibility deficit but rather an information processing advantage."

Professor Lavie, together with Dr Anna Remington and Dr John Swettenham from the UCL Developmental Science department, tested this hypothesis on 16 adult volunteers with autism spectrum disorders and compared their results against those of 16 typical adults in a task to challenge their perceptual load capacity.

The task involved looking at a circle of letters flashed very briefly on the screen and searching for some 'target' letters. At the same time, the participants were also asked to detect a small grey shape that occasionally appeared outside the letter circle.

When only one or two letters were flashed on the screen, the researchers found that both groups could successfully find the letter and detect the shape. However, making the search task more challenging by increasing the number of letters significantly impaired the detection performance of the typical adults -- but not of the adults with autism spectrum disorders, who were able to detect the extra shape just as well in the more challenging conditions. When the task became harder, they significantly outperformed the typical adults.

Professor Lavie says: "Our study confirms our hypothesis that people with autism have higher perceptual capacity compared to the typical population. This can only be seen once the task becomes more demanding, with more information to process. In the more challenging task conditions, people with autism are able to perceive significantly more information than the typical adult."

Professor Lavie believes that the finding may help explain why people with autism spectrum disorders, such as Asperger's syndrome, may excel in some careers such as IT, which can require intense concentration and the ability to process a great deal of information from a computer screen. Autism diagnoses in California's Silicon Valley reportedly increased three-fold in the 1990s, a phenomenon termed 'geek syndrome' by 'Wired' magazine.

"Our study clearly shows that people with autism can do better than typical adults in tasks involving rapid presentations of a lot of information," says Professor Lavie. "There are clearly careers, such as in IT, that can benefit from employing people with high-functioning autism spectrum disorders."

"These findings could also enable clinicians and families to help individuals with autism spectrum disorder capitalise on their strengths by exploiting the increase in perceptual capacity," adds Dr Remington.

The research also sheds light on the relationship between autism and 'savants', such as artist Stephen Wiltshire (who is able to draw in incredible detail a scene seen for only a few seconds) and Kim Peek (on whom the eponymous character of the film 'Rain Man' was based). The researchers argue that these abilities are, in part, likely to be a consequence of their high perceptual capacity; however, their study suggests that most people with autism share this characteristic, regardless of whether they possess exceptional savant-like abilities.
