Lower summer energy costs and get a facelift for your home

Lower summer energy costs and get a facelift for your home(ARA) ? During summer, many of us look forward to fun-filled days at the pool or beach, but we definitely don?t look forward to exorbitantly high cooling bills during the heat of the season.

A typical single-family home shells out $2,200 in annual energy costs, according a recent study by the U.S. Department of Energy?s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. And according to the Laboratory?s website, if a house has central air conditioning, even though the system is only used a few months out of the year, it is most likely the single biggest consumer of electricity, driving annual air conditioning costs that can exceed a shocking $1,000.

However, there are a number of ways you can improve the energy-efficient aspects of your home and save on electricity costs.

Seal the deal

According to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), one of the most cost-effective ways to improve energy efficiency in homes is to seal and insulate windows and doors. Often, this means replacing old, leaky, sticky, poorly performing windows and doors. A typical home that replaces its single-paned, clear glass windows with energy-efficient windows can realize up to $494 in annual savings, according to the EPA.

?Windows are a wonderful source of natural light, but if they are old, they can act as giant heat lamps in the summer, allowing the sun?s heat into a home,? says David Harrison, chief marketing office of Champion Windows, one of the nation?s leading home improvement companies. ?By installing our Comfort 365 Replacement Windows, homeowners can help shrink their cooling bills. Champion?s Double hung replacement windows exceed ENERGY STAR rating requirements by an average of 42 percent for Solar Heat Gain, which is the measure of the sun?s heat that comes through your window. Champion windows also help keep the cool air in and still let in natural sunlight ? without the heat.?

For more energy saving window tips check out the U.S. Department of Energy?s website or Champion Window?s Energy Efficient Replacement Windows at www.championwindow.com.

On the side

Another great way to cut costs is to increase insulation by installing energy-efficient siding. Vinyl siding and energy-efficient underlayment can increase a home?s R-value, a measure of insulation?s ability to resist heat traveling through it. The higher the R-value, the better the thermal performance of the insulation. By increasing the R-value, homeowners can save more than 20 percent on their electricity bills, according to energysavers.gov.

?Installing an energy-efficient siding system, including ENERGY STAR rated insulation board, can help insulate your home against the heat, reduce the amount of air flow into your house, making it easier to keep cool air in during the summer,? says Harrison. ?At Champion, our customers have told us they were pleasantly surprised to see a decrease in their energy bills after their siding installation.?

Other ways to improve energy efficiency and lower summer electric bills include:

* Increasing insulation in attics

* Making sure you have proper roof ventilation

* Sealing air conditioner ducts

* Keeping your blinds closed when the sun is shining in

* Using a programmable thermostat

By making a few of these changes, you won?t cringe when you open those utility bills, and you might even be able to reap benefits beyond the summer.

?If homes are not properly insulated or sealed, cool air is leaking out and homeowners are throwing money out of the window,? says Harrison. ?By making a few energy-efficient changes to your home, you can help keep electric bills in check and even increase the value of your home.?

Facebook Timeline Photos Redesign Lets You Blow Up Favorites 4X Larger, Shows Tagged Shots First

Facebook Timeline Photos RedesignFacebook is taking photo curation to next level. You can now favorite your own photos to make them appear 4X larger in a revamped Photos section of your profile. The redesign that rolls out over the next few days also sees a much better navigation system that first brings you to "photos of you" or whomever's profile you're on, instead of a list of albums. The update doesn't automatically feature the most beloved photos on your Timeline based on Likes and comments, the way Google+ now does in its news feed on tablet. Still, it digitizes a natural behavior of how we interact with photos in the physical world -- making big prints of our favorites.

Iran leader: Stop exporting oil, make new economy

(AP) ? Iran's supreme leader has outlined a new approach to overcome Western sanctions ? stop selling oil and build knowledge-based industries instead.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's says what he calls a "resistant economy" can effectively counter the sanctions.

This month the European Union enforced a ban on oil imports from Iran, after the U.S. stepped up its banking sanctions.

The sanctions aim to force Iran to stop enriching uranium. The West suspects Iran is aiming to build nuclear weapons. Iran denies that.

Khamenei said Iran should stop selling raw materials, including oil, and instead promote "knowledge-based companies which can make a resistant economy more sustainable."

He gave no timetable or details of what would amount to a total overhaul of Iran's economy.

Khamenei's remarks were broadcast on state TV Sunday night.

Thomson Reuters on the Front Foot - David Worlock | Developing ...

It has been a month of contrasts . Good solid results at Reed Elsevier have the market analysts demanding the sale of Lexis Legal : the chief break-up irritant at Bernstein can forecast a 20% increase in value as soon as it is done . Reed Elsevier now trades at a discount to last year?s valuation as well as to the wider quoted marketplace . And how does this come about ? Simply by representing the company to analysts as a diversified investment portfolio , and then? disappointing them with the results , which always prompts a demand for the sale of the weakest bit and the purchase of something stronger .

Meanwhile , over at Thomson Reuters , it has been a dynamic July in terms of forward progress . You can measure that in terms of acquisitions if you like , but to me the key element is the strategic positioning of these purchases and what they do to pursue the goal of market leadership in services and solutions for corporate finance , tax and regulatory , from banking and equity trading , law and tax/accountancy in practitioner terms right across to the desktop of the corporate finance? ,tax and legal department at the other . If the Thomson Reuters vision works out , it will connect up all of these functions and activities into a series of solutions which will compel big and then medium and small corporates into easier methods of information handling, and methods that get easier the more reliant they become on inter-related services and solutions from Thomson Reuters . This is about integration in the face of user need , about recognizing the primacy of the network , and about? bringing one huge company with many specializations into focus on the issues of service and solution . This is not a diverse portfolio of disparate elements : it buys the bits it needs and sells the bits that do not fit , but? the definition of acquisition has to do with whether these global aims are satisfied as well as whether the purchase makes financial sense and the required return .

Lets take a few July examples . The headline purchase was the acquisition of FX Alliance for $625 m . Here , then , are Thomson Reuters , a leading player in the sell-side interbank foreign exchange market? , one of its traditional strengths , pulling in a major player from the bank-focused? currency trading business for corporates , asset managers and hedge funds . Foreign exchange is a huge diversified marketplace , involving some $5 trillions of transactions per day , and this deal gives Thomson Reuters the ability to work in both the internal institutional markets and the corporate -facing? external market , using electronic platforms and high speed trading techniques all the while .

By comparison , my next two examples are smaller in scale , but demonstrate other aspects of the process that is going on . Having written extensively about the launch of the Thomson Reuters GRC division ? bringing legal and tax into focus with financial services in the areas of Governance , Regulation and Compliance , I want to mark the arrival of ? Eikon for Compliance Management ? with a special commendation . It seems to me that this now closes a huge loop , and provides a service environment which was never more urgently needed . It is said that there are now 60 new regulatory announcements a day? from some 230 regulators and exchanges in financial markets , yet less than a third of traders report having any compliance? training or update in the last 3 months . But to join up solutions for your customers you need to start with a joined-up company yourself .

My last example dates back to the experience of some 25 years as an external director on the international side of the Bureau of National Affairs , which has now disappeared into Bloomberg . An issue that intrigued me there , which attracted a great deal of attention and was crying out for a service solution , was Transfer Pricing . Boring ? More likely stupifying ! Here was an area that always demanded a software -based solution , since most tax lawyers and finance specialists were deeply reluctant to get entrapped in its intricacies , and access to someone who knew what they were talking about was rare and expensive . BNA produced great books on the subject , and so did WK and others . But Thomson Reuters has produced ONESOURCE Transfer Pricing , with an Analyser to get update on the compliance requirement for corporates who trade across borders and a Documenter and Benchmarking solution , ensuring that users have the right forms , and , vitally , ensuring that they are benchmarking against corporations whose solutions have already been accepted by the authorities . Here then is a vital but expensively neglected field of corporate activity , which reflects on much that Thomson Reuters is now about .

The final reflection is upon ?platform ? . At all levels Thomson Reuters is on a multiplicity of platforms , and while content integration and re-use has led to access being eased and common metadata standards evolved , this still clearly has a good way to go . And there is strength in this multiplicity ? no one wants to interrupt the steady absorption of Eikon , now beginning to fulfill expectations , or damage the market primacy of WestlawNext . I expect , however , in the age of data , to see the continuing back-end integration of this very large? player?s systems to be a continuing theme . At the moment its greatest rival is a company , Bloomberg , who is swaddled in the limitations of a Victorian corset ? the Terminal . That too will have to go , as Bloomberg limit their own future through an inability to get its new plays in law and government to sell to end users who do not want even a flat-priced , all you can eat deal on a? box originally built for traders . There is a midpoint , and Thomson Reuter?s migration looks like getting them there first .

avast! blog ? International Technology Upgrade Week

How many times have you seen a prompt to update software on your computer? How many times have you ignored it, and then got worried or annoyed because it kept reminding you? You are not alone in your procrastination. A full 40% of adults surveyed by Skype say they don?t always update software on their computers when prompted to do so. More than half said they needed to see a prompt between two and five times before they download and install an update.

Skype conducted the survey in preparation of International Technology Upgrade Week. We support them in spreading the word about why it?s important to keep software in top condition ? having the latest security updates being the most important reason.

One of the ways cybercrooks get malware into your system is through exploiting programs that are old or not up-to-date. Most programs, like avast!, send out regular patches and updates, but a quarter of those surveyed said they don?t clearly understand what software updates do, and an equal percentage don?t understand the benefits so updates don?t get done and vulnerabilities persist.

In the survey of American, British and German consumers, Skype asked for their top reasons for either downloading or not downloading updates:

Top Reasons for Updating
1. Keeping computers safe from viruses/hackers
2. Ensures software is free of bugs and crashes less often
3. Having the latest and greatest software features
4. Upgrades are often free

Top Reasons for Not Updating
1. Worried about computer security, so I don?t download everything I?m prompted to
2. There is no real benefit to me
3. Upgrades take too long
4. Lack of understanding about what the update(s) will do

Take some time during International Technology Upgrade Week to make sure your computer software is all updated, and remind your friends and family members too. And next time one of your programs prompts you to update, don?t wait too long before you take care of it! Here?s a tip to help you.

Tip to beat procrastination

The two-minute rule says: If you determine an action can be done in two minutes, you actually should do it right then because it?ll take longer to organize it and review it than it would be to actually finish it the first time you notice it.

92% Marvel's The Avengers

All Critics (279) | Top Critics (44) | Fresh (258) | Rotten (21) | DVD (3)

Never underestimate the entertainment value of the Hulk Smash.

If you are a Marvel fan, then The Avengers will feel like Christmas. Thanks to the merry doings of the director, Joss Whedon, all your favorite characters are here, as shiny and as tempting as presents under the tree.

Ultimately, it all comes back to Whedon: His clear vision for each character and how they might be profitably intermingled; his unexpected knack for action choreography; his funny, tender, immaculately constructed script.

A spectacle in the grandest sense of the word ...

Whedon, a pop-genre magician best known for Buffy the Vampire Slayer, is a master of viewer manipulation - because he never gives up his own seat in the crowd.

The performances are so well-pitched in The Avengers, meshing with such vividness and ease, that it's tempting to overpraise the good but not great movie that surrounds them.

The filmmakers play a conservative game, not setting out to make a great movie but simply making sure not to screw it up an entire franchise.

Feels like actual Marvel Comics are being injected directly into your bloodstream. It's simply jaw-dropping.

While it reflects a movie culture that has traded originality for scale - one wonders if there's a shred of originality anywhere in the film - The Avengers is grand, throwaway fun.

Yeah, it's all that. A tent-pole cash cow for the studio, a dream come true for fans, and treat for action aficionados, 'The Avengers' comes at you as the first true "summer movie spectacular" of the 2012 season.

Wonderful blink and you'll miss them comic beats in the middle of the finale's mayhem. And what glorious mayhem!

The overlong, stale experience barely raises a fast pulse, as the movie quickly stumbles into a standard film structure and doesn't even try to break free.

... The movie isn't so much a work of storytelling as it is a marathon of wish-fulfillment moments for comic book enthusiasts -- punches peppered with punchlines.

The culmination of four distinct franchises is an exciting and entertaining product.

It's the humor that's The Avengers' strength.

Whedon's clear fanboy glee is irresistibly contagious to the audience, whether the heroes and villains go at it with fisticuffs or sharp, witty dialogue.

Comic-book movie delivers the goods

By the time the utterly routine (and decidedly endless) finale rolls around, Marvel's The Avengers has unquestionably squandered the potential of its premise and its cast...

Delivers big time with everything longtime fans and newcomers alike could possibly want in a summer blockbuster that definitely surpasses the hype.

This too-long adventure is a sensory overload --- complete with loud, protracted battle scenes and hunky super heroes who provide the necessary eye candy. It's also very funny, and highly entertaining.

There is much humor laced throughout the film, giving it an air of not taking itself too seriously -- which is as it should be in a film of this genre.

The Avengers lives up to every last ounce of hype.

It's a blockbuster that manages to please with intelligence and fun. Whedon makes it look easy.

It's all very smoothly done but comes without a hint of surprise or revelation.

Rampage victims' tweets give insight on life, death

For Jessica Ghawi and Alex Sullivan, life's final minutes were about anticipation ? not for anything life-altering, just a few hours of entertainment.

But their thoughts, as shared through tweets from two of the 12 killed in Friday's early-morning mass shooting at a movie theater in Aurora, Colo., have become a focal point for thousands of Americans openly contemplating a fundamental curiosity: For people about to die, what are the last moments in this world like?

Such minutes have typically been intimate, once reserved for one's own confidantes or, at least, a select few who might be nearby. But as Twitter and other social networks become real-time databases of human thought and interaction, the unfiltered conclusions of some human lifetimes are being cast into the public sphere for the entire world to see.

Among the billions of posts made each day on social nets, users regularly gravitate toward final postings by celebrities and others who have died. The Aurora victims have become the most recent example.

Sullivan was celebrating his 27th birthday at the start of a weekend when he planned to also mark his first anniversary with his wife, Cassie. He tweeted shortly before the movie: "(hash)TheDarkKnightRises (at)Reel_Nerds oh man one hour till the movie and its going to be the best BIRTHDAY ever."

Once his death became public, the tweet morphed into a springboard for a steady stream of people noting its significance and sharing sentiments. As new tweets rolled in, they came from different people but many comments were universal; things like: "RIP," ''So sad. Last tweet," or teary emoticons.

For Ghawi, a 24-year-old aspiring sportscaster who worked under the name Jessica Redfield, the public words in those last minutes are her bantering with a magazine hockey writer about being among the first to see the highly anticipated Batman movie, "The Dark Knight Rises."

"You aren't seeing it tonight?!" Ghawi asks Sporting News hockey writer Jesse Spector on Twitter.

"Nope," he replies.

Ghawi then jokes that Spector is a loser, and he retorts that that's why she's tweeting and not at the movie. Ghawi replies with her final tweet, in all caps: "MOVIE DOESN'T START FOR 20 MINUTES." It was, though she of course didn't realize it, her last public statement.

But as it was retweeted and favorited thousands of times and cited by reporters worldwide to help piece together portraits of her personality, it also, in a way that wasn't possible a few years ago, connected her to countless people seeking to know her as more than a victim of one of the worst mass shootings in American history.

The unknowing candor shown by Ghawi and Sullivan make the glimpses they gave us even more honest. It underscores that few of us know when death will arrive. And in a world where social media has become so deeply ingrained in our shared culture so quickly, we also have little control over which random slice of life might serve as our final exclamation.

Anyone who's used social networks knows they've revolutionized the way we communicate. But few sign up for accounts thinking they can change how we think about life and death.

"I hate that this was a last tweet," tweeted Brad Kovach, a 22-year-old computer science student at the University of Wyoming, in response to Ghawi's last tweet.

Kovach said in an interview that the exchange gives us a joyous snapshot of Ghawi, but probably not the goodbye Ghawi would have picked if she knew she was speaking to the world for the last time.

But he acknowledged being uncertain about what's a fitting final tweet.

"I'm thinking if that was me, I wouldn't want that (message) to be me. At the same time, I kind of do, I just want it to be a very positive expression," Kovach said. "Hopefully, your life doesn't end in tragedy and I guess there's no preparing for that."

For Spector, who ribbed Ghawi once more after her final tweet before the horror unfolded, her last statement is haunting. "It's impossible to comprehend, and worse because Jessica isn't here to tweet the right thing," Spector wrote in a column hours after her death.

Roberta Cohen, a grief specialist who runs a firm that responds to traumatic events all over Texas, said people who generally don't think about their own deaths are jolted by occurrences like the Colorado shooting because they can relate to the victims and what they were doing before they died.

"An event like this breaks through that denial and gets us to look at life-and-death questions," Cohen said.

Even if they're not profound statements, people are touched by final comments, more than they are moved by deliberately reflective, insightful statements made in times when nothing significantly changes afterward, she said.

Twitter and other social networks make it easier for those comments to spread quickly. For some, tweets by those killed ? retweeted and appended by others, are the first time they put a name to who died.

"It's a pretty amazing concept that we can see what people are thinking just moments ago, and moments later their lives change," Cohen said.

It has happened before, most notably with the famous.

?Andrew Breitbart, the conservative blogger and publisher who died in March after collapsing while walking near his home, used his last tweet to apologize to a follower for calling him a "putz."

?Dr. Frank Ryan, a well-known plastic surgeon from Beverly Hills, veered off a cliff in 2010 just minutes after tweeting a picture of his dog looking out toward the ocean from a sand dune.

?Heavy D's final tweet late last year became as memorable as his rap hits when he wrote simply: "BE INSPIRED."

It goes beyond postings from the famous and highly publicized, though. Months of Facebook updates by a mother who died soon after giving birth to a son resulted in a memorable 2010 Washington Post story told through her posts. Her final post, less than 12 hours before she died, told of her fear at being transferred to another hospital for more evaluation and testing.

These glimpses, pecked away by fingers or thumbs in fleeting moments and amplified only when their significance becomes known, are spurring people to more publicly share spontaneous thoughts about moments of life and death. All it took here to open the floodgates were a couple 140-character messages, and the knowledge that the people who wrote them had died ? mere moments or hours ago ? in a very public tragedy.

Those brief glimpses still don't give us firm answers. But that's not quite the point.

"It really kind of intensified my whole emotional response to the whole tragedy," Kovach said. "It definitely just reminds us that even if our only common thread is that we both have a Twitter account, we're still humans and we're in this together."

OKI MB471

The OKI MB471 ($399 direct) is the next step up in OKI Data America's line from the OKI MB461 ($349, 3 stars) that I also recently reviewed. OKI targets both models at micro or small offices with relatively heavy-duty print, scan, and copy needs. The key difference between the two is that the MB471 adds faxing. And just as the MB461 is an attractive choice if you don't need a fax capability in your multi-function printer (MFP), the MB471 is equally attractive if you do.

Let me amend that.

The MB471 might be your preferred choice even if you don't need faxing?which, not so incidentally, also makes it an Editors' Choice. As I mentioned in the MB461 review, there are other differences between the two models. The maximum resolution for the MB461 is 600 by 2400 dots per inch (dpi), for example, while the MB471 offers 1200 by 1200. The difference can affect both speed and output quality, and, indeed, the MB471 offers slightly better-looking output, particularly for text.

A potentially more important difference is printer language support. Both printers support PCL, which is all that most offices need. For those that require PostScript, however, the MB471 offers it as well, letting you install drivers for PCL, PostScript, or both. Even if you don't need faxing, either of these differences?the resolution or the extra language support?could easily justify the extra cost for the MB471.

Also worth mention is that OKI sells a Wi-Fi version of the MB471, the MB471w ($475 direct). According to OKI, except for Wi-Fi, the two models are identical, so this entire review should apply to both. Keep in mind, however, that if you print using Wi-Fi with the MB471w, the speed may be different than it is with the Ethernet connection I used.

Basics
The MB471 can print and fax from as well as scan to a PC, including over a network; it can work as a standalone copier; and it can print from and scan to a USB memory key. As with most office MFPs, it offers a letter-size flatbed, but supplements it with an automatic document feeder (ADF) that can scan up to legal-size pages. The ADF in this case offers a 50-page capacity and the ability to duplex, turning the page over after scanning one side to scan the other.

The printer's paper handling is another feature that's goes a step beyond the MB461. Both models include a 250-sheet paper tray and a built-in duplexer (for two-sided printing), but the MB471 adds a 100-sheet multi-purpose tray. This should be enough for most micro and small offices, but as with the M461, if you need more, you can add an optional 530-sheet tray ($183.99 direct), for a maximum 880-sheet input capacity.

One other feature the two printers share is that because the ADF and printer both duplex, you can copy both single and double sided originals to your choice of single- or double-sided copies. In addition, the MB471 can scan both single- and double-sided originals for faxing.

Setup and Speed
Although the MB471 is too big to share a desk with comfortably, at 17.9 by 16.8 by 16.7 inches (HWD), it is small enough to fit easily in most micro or small offices. Setup is absolutely typical for the breed. For my tests, I connected the printer to a network and used the PCL driver on a Windows Vista system.

As with the MB461, the MB471's speed on my tests was on the slow side for its 35 page per minute (ppm) rating, a speed that you should see for text documents with no formatting. I timed it on our business applications suite (using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing), at 9.5 ppm.

OKI MB471

That makes the MB471 essentially tied with the MB461, at 10 ppm, but slower than the Editors Choice Canon imageClass MF4570dn ($299, 4 stars), at 12.3 ppm. As another point of reference, it's also tied with the more expensive Samsung SCX-5639FR ($550 street, 3.5 stars) at 9.7 ppm. The measured speed, in short, counts as respectable, if not particularly impressive.

Output Quality and Running Cost
Output quality is slightly above par overall, with above-par text, and par graphics and photos. The quality is a tad better than the MB461's output, particularly for text, but it falls in the same general categories across the board.

Text is one step above the tight range that includes the vast majority of mono MFPs, making it easily good enough for any business need short of high-quality desktop publishing.

Graphics output is easily good enough for any internal business need, but depending on your level of perfectionism, you might or might not consider it good enough to hand out to an important client or customer when you need to convey a sense of professionalism. Photo quality is good enough to print photos in client newsletters or the like, and more than good enough to print Web pages with recognizable photos.

One last, and particularly welcome, plus for the MB471 is its low claimed running cost, at 1.8 cents per page. Most other mono MFPs in this price range claim at least a penny more per page, which means that?depending on what other printers you're considering?the MB471 can easily save you $100 or more for every 10,000 pages you print. Print 40,000 pages over the printer's lifetime, and you'll save enough to pay yourself back for the initial cost.

As may be obvious, the OKI MB471 offers a lot to like. It doesn't stand out for its speed or output quality, but it delivers a balance of speed, output quality, paper handling, price, and MFP features that make it a highly attractive choice as a workhorse MFP for a small office. More important, any office that needs this level of heavy-duty printing will almost certainly benefit from the low claimed running cost as well. And that's enough to make the OKI MB471 not just an attractive choice, but Editors' Choice as well.

A Home Business Need to be A Family Affair? / Best Photos and ...

In case you personal a household business, does your family members participate or do you perform alone

I?ve heard tales, and to get a brief though lived them, about how a spouse will eagerly commence a property based business of 1 sort or a different and just before they are able to even get their feet wet in the company ? - BAM the other spouse starts belittling and usually putting a damper on the once enthusiastic entrepreneur?s ambitions.

Fortunately for me, my husband saw that I don?t just discuss anything that I intend to accomplish, I do it ? - so he?s because changed his tune; particularly now that I make as a lot from my home corporations as I did from my prior job, and we do not spend kid care. Ha!

Anyway, it?s been over two years since all that mess transpired, and I?ve seen and heard just about each and every story imaginable on the topic of home company start-ups/failures. I?ve also learned that most spouses, family members and ?friends? react in such damaging strategies out of either fear or ignorance. I suppose some are just plain mean, but properly, that is an additional situation we?ll leave for Dr. Phil or Oprah.

For lucky company builders that have encouraging families, the perform at home life is great, very very good. My 14 year old daughter is my part-time Assistant, and her tiny salary is tax deductible also, so there?s a different plus in beginning an organization.

Generating a better future for the family members is in all probability essentially the most recurring ?Why? that I hear from new small business owners. With such a strong reason driving the selection to perform from residence, then why should not the complete household be involved It really is for them right after all.

Uncover a way that even the littlest member can take portion within the loved ones business. Keep in mind as well that helping with chores, operating errands, baby-sitting for younger sibs, taking turns with dinner etc. are all just as essential as becoming in a position to perform residence workplace work, if not ?more? important inside the lengthy run.

If you?re at the moment suffering having a spouse or partner who just does not ?get? what you happen to be carrying out ? please don?t quit. Keep on building and attempting and enable them ?get? it through concrete outcomes. Ordinarily, with some property businesses, positive outcomes that a ?non-biz? kind can wrap their minds about, does take time. Sadly money talks, even so, and they may perhaps not take you seriously till you could show them your initially examine; and with persistence and consistency ? - You will.

Checkbook diplomacy? China offers $20B to Africa

Jason Lee / Reuters

China's President Hu Jintao (right) shakes hands with South Africa's President Jacob Zuma during the opening ceremony of the Fifth Ministerial Conference of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation in Beijing on Thursday.

By NBC News wire services

BEIJING --?Chinese President Hu Jintao on Thursday pledged African governments $20 billion in credit over the next three years and called for more China-Africa coordination international?affairs to defend against the "bullying" of richer powers.

Hu made the lending pledge during the opening ceremony of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation in Beijing. The credit line is double the amount offered in 2009 at the last forum held in Egypt.?

Hu promised more Chinese help for African countries in building agricultural?technology centers, training medical and other personnel, and digging wells to expand access to clean water. China will encourage investment and assistance in infrastructure that facilitates trade within Africa, he said.?

China has emerged as Africa's main trading partner and a major source of investment for infrastructure, pouring billions of dollars into roads and developing the energy sector across the continent.?

But the loans could add to discomfort in the West, which criticizes China for overlooking human rights abuses in its business dealings with Africa, especially in Beijing's desire to feed its booming resource-hungry economy.

PhotoBlog - Africa rising? China building on Zambian frontier

Hu brushed off such concerns in his speech at the Great Hall of the People, attended by leaders including South African President Jacob Zuma and Equatorial Guinea's Teodoro Obiang Nguema, a man widely condemned by rights groups as one of the world's most corrupt leaders.

"China wholeheartedly and sincerely supports African countries to choose their own development path, and will wholeheartedly and sincerely support them to raise their development ability," Hu said.

China will "continue to steadfastly stand together with the African people, and will forever be a good friend, a good partner and a good brother", he added at the summit held every three years since 2000.

Sudan's president, who is accused by an international court of war crimes, is visiting China, one of the biggest investors in his country. ?The visit comes just days before the oil-rich south of Sudan declares its independence.? NBC's Adrienne Mong reports.????

Hu also pledged to "continue to expand aid to Africa, so that the benefits of development can be realized by the African people." He did not provide an amount.

Hu said the new loans would support infrastructure, agriculture, manufacturing and development of small and medium-sized businesses in Africa.

'Checkbook' approach
Critics say China supports African governments with dubious human rights records as a means to get access to resources.

The EU has rejected what they call China's "checkbook" approach to doing business with Africa, saying it would continue to demand good governance and the transparent use of funds from its trading partners.

Such criticism draws rebukes from China that the West still views Africa as though it were a colony. Many African countries say they appreciate China's no-strings approach to aid.

"Africa's past economic experience with Europe dictates a need to be cautious when entering into partnerships with other countries," Zuma told the forum.

"We are particularly pleased that in our relationship with China we are equals and that agreements entered into are for mutual gain," Zuma added.

Oil-hungry China welcomes alleged war criminal al-Bashir

"We certainly are convinced that China's intention is different to that of Europe, which to date continues to intend to influence African countries for their sole benefit."

China's friendship with Africa dates back to the 1950s, when Beijing backed liberation movements in the continent fighting to throw off Western colonial rule.

Growing trade links
Chinese state-owned firms in Africa also face criticism for using imported labor to build government-financed projects like roads and hospitals, while pumping out raw resources and processing them in China, leaving little for local economies.

"Certainly quite a number of us are thinking we need to move into more value addition," South African's Trade and Industry Minister Rob Davies told Reuters.

"We need to export mineral products in a more processed form ... We need to bite this bullet very seriously."

Trade has jumped in the past decade, driven by Chinese hunger for resources to power its economic boom and African demand for cheap Chinese products.

China's trade with Africa reached $166.3 billion in 2011, according to Chinese statistics. In the past decade, African exports to China rose to $93.2 billion from $5.6 billion.

Industrial and Commercial Bank of China 601398.SS, for example, the world's most valuable lender, has invested more than $7 billion in various projects across the continent.

Allergy Testing Heart-Get To Know The Unfamiliar ? Health And ...

?

Wade in Health / Wellness (submitted 2012-07-09) The term allergy is very common but as much as everyone seems to have a clue to what it is, not many can describe it well with mere words.

An allergy is described as a hypersensitive reaction of the body to a usually harmless substance. The funny thing with allergies is that you never get to know that you have them till you actually have them. One should not confuse reaction to certain medication to allergy simply because most medicines have their own side effects.

This is why it is important for one to visit an allergy testing center. Allergy testing centers are laboratories which specialize in the testing, diagnosing and treatment of allergies. Why is it important to visit such centers? Well it is quite simple.

You see not all allergies are like a bug bite on your hand which you can slap away.

Some allergy reactions are quite serious and life threatening if not controlled so when you go to these centers you will be able to get the correct information so that you are not in danger. One might wonder what kind of allergies are there and when you go to visit any allergy testing center you will discover that there are two main categories of allergies namely food and environmental allergies. Food allergies occur when your body reacts to the food you have taken in a negative way in that you experience some of these symptoms namely abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, itching, hives, nasal congestion and so much more.

Health experts say that allergy reactions get worse with age and that is why it is important to be tested at an allergy testing center so that one is aware of what to avoid or are supposed to take in small amounts. When one gets to know what they are allergic to they will also avoid assumptions in that there will be no case of a wrong diagnosis since they will know what is happening to their body. Environmental allergy is caused by environmental elements and allergies in this category are reactions to stings by insects, asthmatic attacks, mould, eczema and several others.

Understanding Convenient Products In Plumbing Help ...

If plumbing is something that can have you stumped, you probably know how expensive it is to have it done professionally. You also may have to wait for a plumber to arrive when there?s a problem happening now! Don?t let this happen, read on for tips on solving your own plumbing problems!

Garbage disposals are a common cause of plumbing problems, which is an easy problem to solve. Don?t just put everything down the disposal or treat it like a second trash can. Use the disposal things that would be difficult to dispose of normally. Putting all leftover food down the sink is a good way to produce clogs.

When it comes to plumbing, there is never an unsolvable problem. If you feel yourself becoming frustrated with the project, you should try to take a break from what you are working on. The greatest mistakes start to happen when you become angry and inpatient, so take a break and walk outside.

Do not put cooking oils, fat, or grease, down your drain. These fats cause clogs by solidifying in pipes. To properly dispose of fats, put them in a bowl with a lid that you can dispose of. Once it gets hard, throw it in the trash or compost bin.

Make sure that you avoid throwing fats down the drain after you clean up your meal. Fats can solidify over time which can cause a drainage problem and corrupt your water flow. Throw out fats and different types of cooking oils in the garbage after you finish with your meal.

To avoid sediment buildup, drain gallons of water from your water heater to flush any corrosion. This will help your heater to run more efficiently therefore saving you regular energy costs. Make sure to read your heater?s instructions before attempting this, and do this periodically to make sure that your heater is running as well as it can. Pop to buy provilus for in-depth suggestions.

Many people wonder where the fruit flies are coming from. Each plumbing fixture has a self-sealed reserve that holds about two cups of water. If those pipes are broken or do not seal off, then odors and residue can cause fruit flies. It is recommended before anything to clean your pipes using bleach. If the flies come back, contact a professional.

Plumbing isn?t as hard as it can seem when you have access to good information and advice about how to go about solving your own plumbing problems. Next time you have plumbing problems in your house, try applying the tips from this article and see if you can save some money by solving it yourself!

Boise Police: 35-year-old California man charged with lewd conduct

Solomon Vega Jr. is being held in the Ada County Jail on a felony lewd conduct charge after police say he had illegal sexual contact with a teenage girl in Boise numerous times between 2010 and 2011.

It appears law enforcement officers in California arrested the 35-year-old Vega on an Idaho warrant in connection with the case, as jail records show he is from Fresno and was transferred into the custody of Ada County Sheriff?s deputies at the jail early Wednesday morning.

Boise police began investigating the case in October after being contacted by a third party. The teen told detectives the illegal sexual contact took place at numerous times at a Boise area home, according to reports.

Police say Vega is well known to the teen, who was under the age of 16 at the time of the first incident, according to reports.

When detectives began their investigation in October, Vega was no longer in town, police officials say. Ada County prosecutors issued an arrest warrant for Vega in June. The details of Vega?s arrest in Fresno were not available Wednesday.

Vega will make his initial court appearance later Wednesday.

The crime of lewd conduct in punishable by up to life in prison.

Stress fuels breast cancer metastasis to bone

ScienceDaily (July 17, 2012) ? Stress can promote breast cancer cell colonization of bone, Vanderbilt Center for Bone Biology investigators have discovered.

The studies, reported July 17 in PLoS Biology, demonstrate in mice that activation of the sympathetic nervous system -- the "fight-or-flight" response to stress -- primes the bone environment for breast cancer cell metastasis. The researchers were able to prevent breast cancer cell lesions in bone using propranolol, a cardiovascular medicine that inhibits sympathetic nervous system signals.

Metastasis -- the spread of cancer cells to distant organs, including bone -- is more likely to kill patients than a primary breast tumor, said Florent Elefteriou, Ph.D., director of the Vanderbilt Center for Bone Biology.

"Preventing metastasis is really the goal we want to achieve," he said.

Elefteriou and his colleagues knew from their previous studies that the sympathetic nervous system stimulated bone remodeling, and that it used some of the same signaling molecules that have been implicated in breast cancer metastasis to bone.

"We came to the hypothesis that sympathetic activation might remodel the bone environment and make it more favorable for cancer cells to metastasize there," Elefteriou said.

Evidence from the clinic supported this notion. Breast cancer patients who suffered from stress or depression following their primary treatment had shorter survival times. Both stress and depression activate the sympathetic nervous system.

To explore this possible link, the researchers studied cancer cell metastasis in mice. They followed fluorescently "tagged" human breast cancer cells that were injected into the mouse heart to model the stage of metastasis when breast cancer cells leave the primary site and move through the circulation.

They found that treating the mice with a drug that mimics sympathetic nervous system activation caused more cancer lesions in bone. Using physical restraint to stress the mice and activate the sympathetic nervous system also caused more cancer lesions in bone. Treating the restrained mice with propranolol, one of a family of blood pressure medicines called "beta-blockers," reduced the number of bone lesions.

The investigators demonstrated that sympathetic nervous system activation increases bone levels of a signaling molecule called RANKL, which is known to promote the formation of osteoclasts -- bone cells that break down bone tissue. RANKL has also been implicated in cell migration, and Elefteriou and colleagues were able to show that breast cancer cell migration to the bone depends on RANKL.

The findings suggest that beta-blockers or drugs that interfere with RANKL signaling, such as denosumab, may be useful in preventing breast cancer cell metastasis to bone. Propranolol and other beta-blockers are inexpensive, well characterized, and safe in most patients. They may be a good choice for long-term treatment if future studies in patients with breast cancer confirm their ability to block cancer cell metastasis to bone, Elefteriou said.

"If something as simple as a beta blocker could prevent cancer metastasis to bone, this would impact the treatment of millions of patients worldwide," he said.

Efforts to reduce stress and depression in patients with cancer may have unappreciated benefits in terms of metastasis prevention, he added.

PFT: Gordon says he never failed drug tests

Drew BreesAP

Drew Brees took care of some important business Sunday.

Took some pictures with fans, ordered food and signed a $100 million contract, not necessarily in that order.

Brees made his contract official with his signature after taking a physical at Saints headquarters. He then stopped off for something to eat before a flight back to California, and was good enough to let folks know where.?He asked fans on Twitter if anyone wanted to stop by his Jimmy John?s sandwich shop for ?a celebratory #9?

(For the record, that?s the Italian Night Club, which features Real genoa salami, Italian capicola, smoked ham, and provolone cheese all topped with lettuce, tomato, onion, mayo, and homemade Italian vinaigrette.)

Brett Martel of the Associated Press caught him at the restaurant, where Brees said he looked forward to getting back to work. Brees only did one interview with WWL Radio Friday night, so Martel wins the Sunday Hustle Award, unless he just happened to be getting lunch.

?It?s been a little surreal just because of the process throughout the offseason, and just how challenging an offseason it?s been for everyone, obviously everyone within the Saints organization, this city,? Brees said. ?It?s just been a crazy offseason and I think we?re all just ready to get back to work and excited that it?s all starting here in a week. It?s hard to believe.?

Brees said he had numerous conversations with interim coach Joe Vitt and backup quarterback Chase Daniel, but looks forward to seeing a new look on defense, hoping new coordinator Steve Spagnuolo?s system gives him a challenge when camp starts.

?I just look forward to getting back to work,? Brees said. ?It does feel like it?s been a while since I?ve been out there with my guys and we were running our offense.

?Camp, for me, especially now with Spagnuolo and a new defensive scheme, that?s fun for me because just as a competitor, you go through about a four-week period where you?re competing against your own defense and they?re scheming you up and you?re scheming them up,? Brees added. ?I missed the guys; I missed the competition. I?m just excited to get back to work.?

NFL: Permian grad Bird primed for second season with Chargers

Bront Bird will soon be fighting for his NFL life.

The 23-year-old Permian High School graduate had a decent rookie season with the San Diego Chargers last year. He appeared in nine games before a season-ending knee injury, mostly playing special teams, and made at least one tackle in seven of those games.

Now Bird is preparing for his second season with the Chargers, who open preseason training camp July 25. The 6-foot-4, 245-pound inside linebacker will be earning the league minimum in terms of salary and isn?t assured of making the active roster out of camp, but he feels good about his chances.

?There?s definitely no guarantees in the NFL unless you?re getting paid 10 million dollars a year,? Bird said Friday from San Diego. ?But I know what I can do and know I?m a lot more advanced than I was last year. When they brought me up (from the practice squad) and I did get to play, I played well.?

Bird was signed by the Chargers as an undrafted free agent on July 26, 2011, one day after the end of an owners? lockout that lasted more than four months. The former Texas Tech standout didn?t have the benefit of participating in organized team activities or minicamp and, because preseason camp was abbreviated, Bird said the entrenched starters got most of the repetitions and attention from coaches.

This offseason has been much more productive for Bird, who said he?s recovered from his right knee sprain and is leaner, stronger and faster than he was in 2011. He?s been working out at the Chargers? facilities and with right guard Louis Vasquez, Bird?s former teammate at Texas Tech and neighbor in San Diego.

Bird, who played in a 4-3 defense with the Red Raiders, said he?s also more versed in the Chargers? 3-4 scheme. The Chargers? new defensive coordinator is former linebackers coach John Pagano, which has made for a smooth transition.

?I?ve about got the defense down now, so that?s definitely nice,? Bird said. ?Whenever you learn the defense to a T like that, you?re able to just play so much faster and without any hesitation. I think that would be the biggest difference.?

Bird said he hopes to continue excelling on special teams and take advantage of the opportunities he gets on defense, much like he did last year. Six of his 14 tackles last year came in a 34-14 win against the Baltimore Ravens, and five of those tackles were of the solo variety.

Bird already has taken advantage of the Southern California climate, which he described as ?70 degrees and sunny every day.? He said it?s been much more pleasant than the triple-digit temperatures he endured in Odessa earlier this month, when he returned home to visit family and friends.

His round of golf at Torrey Pines South, the San Diego-area course where Tiger Woods won the U.S. Open in 2008, wasn?t so enjoyable. Bird said he had been consistently shooting in the high 80s at other courses but guessed he shot ?way over 100? at Torrey Pines.

?I honestly gave up on keeping score. I don?t know what I shot,? Bird said. ?It was so hard it made me never want to play golf again.?

At least Bird has football to fall back on. He said the Chargers, who finished 8-8 last year and narrowly missed an AFC playoff berth, are poised for a solid season after making some additions through the draft and free agency.

Bird hopes to be a big part of that, and he can prove his worthiness soon enough.

?We?ll see,? he said. ?I?m pretty confident in myself.?
