Dead letter offices: States closing the most mail centers

First-class stamped mail has declined more than 50 percent in the past 10 years, from 52 billion deliveries in 2002 to 26 billion in 2011.

By Michael B. Sauter, Ashley C. Allen, and Charles B. Stockdale, 24/7 Wall St.

The U.S. Postal service plans to close nearly half of the nation?s mail processing centers beginning May 15. The move, which follows a five-month study on 264 of the country?s 461 centers, puts more than 35,000 workers? jobs at stake. 24/7 Wall St. has identified the nine states where the USPS plans to close the most mail centers.

The plan is USPS?s latest attempt to stem mounting losses. At the current rate, the postal service?s debt is projected to reach $18 billion by 2015. The mail center consolidations are part of a plan to save $2 billion per year and $20 billion by 2015.

While it is still not clear exactly how these changes will affect delivery, a recent plan currently under consideration would make overnight delivery for first class mail impossible in many locations.

24/7 Wall St.: 8 reasons gas will hit $5 this year

The USPS is the first to point out that mail volume has declined precipitously because of electronic mail and the downturn in the economy. This places the postal service in an untenable position as it relies on revenue from mail service instead of tax dollars.

First-class stamped mail has declined more than 50 percent in the past 10 years, from 52 billion deliveries in 2002 to 26 billion in 2011. According to an email from USPS representative Sue Brennan, the drop in mail has resulted in significant excess capacity. She wrote, ?We have an infrastructure that has expanded over decades designed to handle hundreds of billions of pieces of mail and mail volume is no longer increasing. 2006 was our peak year. We need to right-size our infrastructure.?

According to the plan, neighboring facilities will absorb the functions of the 223 targeted centers. The USPS maintains that the 35,000 jobs will be lost through attrition, though employees will be relocated to other facilities initially. When not available, the employees will be offered other work, such as being post office clerks or mail carriers. In some cases, workers could be relocated to different states.

Nine states will see eight or more processing facilities closed. Almost half of the 223 plants scheduled to be shuttered are located in these nine states. For the most part, these states, which include California, New York and Texas, have the largest populations in the country.

24/7 Wall St.: 10 states that cannot pay their bills

If these measures are allowed to go through, some states will certainly be affected more than others. While unemployment in the U.S. has declined over the past year, it remains high in several states -- a number of which are set to lose the most processing facilities. Five of the nine states set to lose the most centers have unemployment rates above the national average of 8.3 percent. California and Illinois have some of the worst unemployment numbers in the country, and these cuts will only hurt their regional economies even further.

These are the nine states where the U.S. Postal Service wants to close the most mail centers.

1. California

  • Proposed closings:?14
  • Unemployment rate:?11.1 percent

Fourteen postal centers will be closed in California -- more than any other state in the nation. California is also the most populous state by a significant margin. Centers to be closed include Bakersfield, Industry, Long Beach, Pasadena, Stockton, Petaluma and North Bay. According to USPS spokesperson Augustine Ruiz, as reported by KPBS, overnight mail will be delayed by at least a day if the delivery address is further than 90 miles from one of the remaining processing centers. Ruiz also notes that employees will be given the option to follow their jobs to the centers where the work will be moved.

24/7 Wall St.: The most-profitable stores in America

2. Georgia

  • Proposed closings:?13
  • Unemployment rate:?9.7 percent

The USPS plans to close 13 processing centers in Georgia this year, including centers in Acworth, Albany, Athens, Augusta, Cartersville, Columbus, Douglasville, Marietta, Savannah, Swainsboro, Valdosta and Waycross. Some processing duties will be sent outside of the state. For example, some mail processing operations of the Augusta Processing and Distribution Facility will soon be handled by the Columbia, S.C., center, according to the?Augusta Chronicle.

3. New York

  • Proposed closings:?12
  • Unemployment rate:?8.0 percent

New York?s postal system will see a lot of change this year. The USPS will be shuttering customer service mail processing centers in Amsterdam, Binghamton, Glens Falls and Plattsburgh. A surface transfer center in Binghamton, processing and distribution centers in Brooklyn, Buffalo, Newburgh, Flushing and Garden City, an annex in Melville, a logistics and distribution center in Bethpage, and a delivery distribution center in Monsey will also be closed. New York is the country?s third-largest state by population.

Planninga from Nanninga: A Strategic Planning Blog: Strategic ...

THE STORY
Once there was Juan, an owner of a trucking delivery business. Juan took great pride in how efficiently his trucks ran. Whenever there was a lull in his business, Juan would open up a hood and work to make the truck engine was operating as efficiently as possible. He had the heart of a mechanic and saw his mechanical skills as a key to his success. Juan had the best running trucks in the business.

Lately, however, Juan?s business had been seeing a lot more lulls than it used to. In fact, business was virtually non-existent. He popped his head out from under the hood to find out why business was so bad.

Juan discovered that his key customers had stopped shipping their products by truck. They had digitized their product and now sold it exclusively over the internet via downloads. There was no way Juan could operate his trucks faster or cheaper than an internet download.

Maybe if Juan had kept his head out from under the hood of the truck and spent more time looking at the environment, he would have seen this coming and been prepared. Now it was too late. Juan soon went bankrupt.

THE ANALOGY
Based on my observations over the years, it seems that most business leaders tend to have one of two tendencies. Either they have the heart of a mechanic or the heart of a designer.

The ?mechanic? business leader is always trying to tweak the business, to improve the status quo. I?ve referred to this in the past as the ?More-Better? approach?always looking for ways to make the status quo do more or do it better than before. Like a mechanic, this type of manager focuses on the inner workings of the business (what?s ?under the hood?). It?s all about being the best at running the current business model. Juan was this type of leader.

The ?designer? business leader takes a different approach. This leader is focused on trying to invent or design the next business model. Their focus is more external. Rather than starting with today?s model and trying to improve it, they start with the marketplace and look for new ways to serve it. Rather than making incremental improvements, the designer leader looks to reinvent the market to their advantage. Steve Jobs was more like this type of leader.

The problem with the mechanic approach is that eventually the status quo becomes obsolete. It doesn?t matter how well you can tweak an obsolete engine. The best-running obsolete engine is still obsolete. Juan?s best truck could never out-deliver a digital download.

And guess who makes the mechanic obsolete? It?s the designer.

If your strategic planning is dominated by a ?mechanic? approach, you will be like Juan and have your head under the hood?focused on incremental internal improvements and blind to what is happening around you to reinvent the status quo. Although that approach can work for a period of time, it will eventually lead a company to obsolescence.

THE PRINCIPLE
The problem is that most business leaders are caught in a mechanic?s mind set, because the engine of their current business model keeps breaking down. The pressures of the immediate crisis force them to focus on an immediate fix. These fixes revolve around making the status quo work better. After all, production lines are breaking down, customers are yelling about late deliveries, key employees are threatening to leave, and suppliers are raising prices. Under this near-term pressure, the thinking goes like this, ?If I can only get this process to work a lot better and more efficiently, then all these pressures will go away.?

As a result, the tendency is to act like a mechanic and keep one?s head under the hood, looking for ways to make all these current crises go away.

The Problem When Leaders Are Merely Mechanics
Now it is true that crises cannot be ignored. Problems in the business need to be fixed. That?s why such a large percentage of employees work in business operations. You need lots of ?mechanics? on the payroll.

The problem is when your top executives still think of themselves as mechanics. In the story, Juan was running a trucking company, yet he still wanted to spend his time as a mechanic. He was ignoring what leaders need to do?lead their companies into the future.

Leaders need to become less of a mechanic and more of a designer. And this may be a tough mindset to change, since solving near-term crises by tweaking the status quo (mechanic work) is probably what got the person promoted to a leadership position in the first place.

How can you tell when a leader is too much of a mechanic? When times really get tough, a mechanic wants to double down and spend even more effort on trying to fix the status quo so that ?it works again.?

Unfortunately, the reason why the engine of your business isn?t working may be because it has become the wrong engine?it has become obsolete. The best response at this point is not to spend more time trying to fix the status quo, but to move on to the next business model. And you won?t find it by staring under the hood. You will only find the next big thing if you have a leader who is leading the charge to find it.

The Necessity of Strategic Planning to Break the Mindset
Helping leaders spend more time thinking like designers is probably the biggest benefit of practicing the discipline of strategic planning. It helps leaders take time out from working under the hood to see the bigger picture. It forces them to question the status quo. It helps them think like a designer.
In particular, there are two principles that strategic planners can use to help create a designer mindset.

1. Change is Usually Not Incremental
Industries rarely evolve along a steady, gradual line. No, it is often interrupted with great upheaval as one business model is rejected and another replaces it. And no amount of tinkering with the old will get you to the new.

Kodak could never incrementally improve analog film to make it turn into digital imaging. No amount of improvements to manufacturing a gas tank will get you to battery-powered automobiles. A more efficient printing press will not save newspapers from the upheaval of digital media.

Change tends to be radical and requires a radical response. Radical responses need to be designed. You won?t find the answer by tweaking the engine under the hood.

Strategists provide a great benefit when they remind people of how industries radically shift (and why tinkering won?t help you bridge the shift). They provide even more value when they help point the way to where the shift is occurring and how to reinvent the model to stay on top.

2. Even Designers Can Fall Into the Trap of Evolving into Mere Mechanics
Usually, it is an outside firm which upsets the status quo. Because they have no vested interest in the status quo, they can boldly attack the status quo with the next big thing and win.

The problem is that, eventually, the radical new thing of today becomes the status quo of tomorrow. And then something radically different upsets the ?newer? status quo. The cycle never stops.

Computers used to be the hot new thing. Now they are kind of quaint, with iPads, smartphones, and Kindles taking over. And the hot new things did not come from the leading computer manufacturers. No, they came from places like Amazon (Kindle), Google (via Android), and Apple (a minor also-ran in computing).

The problem is that the new company?s success came from pursuing the new business model. Therefore, they get overly attached to that new model. When it comes time to move on to an even newer model, there is a tendency to stay back and act like a mechanic?trying to fix the old new thing instead of designing the next new thing.

Strategists provide a great benefit when they remind people of how the cycle of business model innovation never ends (making your new design eventually become as obsolete as the old design it replaced). They provide even more value when they help point the way to when the cycle is about to turn again and how to turn to stay on top.

SUMMARY
Every company needs ?mechanics? to help keep the current business running. But when senior leaders are overly focused on being mechanics, the company stagnates. They are left behind perfecting the obsolete while the rest of the world is moving forward to the next business model. That is why the strategic planning process is so vital. It helps leaders get a broader perspective, in order to:

a) Perceive in advance when it is time for radical reinvention;
b) Figure out how to reinvent the model in order to stay on top.

FINAL THOUGHTS
You can?t stop change. Therefore, take advantage of the change. After all, that?s when the biggest changes in market share occur in an industry. If you take advantage of the change, then your market share will skyrocket. If you ignore change your market share will plummet.

Ovarian cancer

Ovarian cancer has its roots in the ovaries. This is regarded to be the fifth most common cancer that prevail among women. Mostly, this kind of cancer arise from the surface i.e. the epithelium of the ovary but in rare cases it can also arise out of the fallopian tube. The other type also originates from the egg or supporting cells and this is called gynecologic cancer.

It is a little difficult to diagnose the early signs of ovarian cancer since the signs are absent on women early on. At times it might be that the disease may prevail for months but has not been recognized or diagnosed. It is often the case that by the time the cancer gets diagnosed, the tumor spreads beyond the ovaries. At this stage ovarian cancer is not to difficult to treat but often fatal as well. Research is however going on so that this cancer can be treated at an early stage.

It is being said that less than one-third ovarian cancers are detected before they have spread outside the ovaries. Only 20% women are diagnosed early. However some of the symptoms of ovarian cancer include:-

  • A swollen belly area
  • Less appetite or feeling full quickly
  • Pain in the pelvis or lower abdominal area
  • Frequent urination or urinary urgency
  • Unusual vaginal bleeding
  • Pain in the leg

Some of the less common problems include:-

  • Shortness of breath
  • Nausea
  • Indigestion
  • Gas
  • Constipation
  • diarrhea

Women who have someone in the family who has had ovarian cancer before run high chances of having ovarian cancer. Treatment in all stages of ovarian cancer requires surgery. Moreover, women who has given birth has a less chance of developing ovarian cancer. Women, who have had cancer of the breast, uterus or the colon, have a higher chance of developing breast cancer. Women who are above the age of 55 have been mostly diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Women who have known to take estrogen without progesterone for a prolonged period of 10 years or more are known to have developed this type of cancer.

For offering the best treatment your doctor first of all requires to know the grade of the tumor and the extent of the disease. It also matters whether the tumor has reached to the nearby tissues and has spread to which other parts and organs of your body. But before opting for the treatment, you must be clear:-

  • What is the stage of your disease and has the can cancer spread to other parts of the body?
  • ?What is the best kind of treatment for you?
  • What are the expected benefits of each of these kind of treatments?
  • What are risks and possible side effects of these kind of treatments?
  • Will these treatments affect your normal activities?
  • What would be the cost of the treatment? Will your insurance cover the cost?
  • Will you be able to conceive and have children after the treatment?
  • How often will you have to go for checkups after the treatment?

Recently it has been found out that if performed on a regular basis, a vaginal sonogram with CA125 blood test can help detect ovarian cancer at an early stage. Dr. Robert True for years has been engaged in detecting ovarian cancer among women. He also offers vaginal sonograms for patients who are overly concerned. He offers extra tests to women during their yearly visits and though these tests are not covered by their insurance, these can provide them the extra comfort and relief.

Revolutionise Your Lifestyle and Bathroom in One with the Steam ...

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend

The steam shower has revolutionised our lifestyles giving us the ability to simply take a refreshing shower or enjoy the wonderful features that come readily integrated within each enclosure.

The steam shower may seem relatively new to our society but the concept dates back to ancient times when Europe was dominated by the Romans. In these periods the steam bath was the main method for reviving, relaxing and rejuvenating the body. Today the steam shower has become an amazing appliance that is eagerly dreamed of by most home owners looking to enjoy the luxurious wonders of the spa.

The variety of steam shower cubicles readily available with bathroom suppliers is inspiring. Although the designs vary greatly, each enclosure comes fitted with a vast selection of features that range from television, radio and telephone to chromo-therapy and LED lighting and much, much more.

Before proceeding with buying a steam shower you must first ensure you have adequate space for assembling and fitting the cubicle. Although the dimensions may be apparent to fit your bathroom you do need additional room for assembling the cubicle. Another important dimension is the room required for opening the cubicle doors. Many people realise this important factor when it is too late and then find that they do not have the room to open the shower cubicle doors. If this could be a problem try to purchase a shower cabin that features either bi-fold doors or better still sliding doors.

The whole concept of the steam shower is to enable you to enjoy a truly rewarding experience every time you shower. Not only this, but utilise the wonderful health benefits that are included within the enclosure. The reason why the steam shower was created was specifically to help our bodies relax and this combined with the steam generator, body massage jets, foot and calf massager, mood enhancement lighting etc. allows the body to receive the very best in health therapy. The amount of benefits offered by the steam shower is amazing, from purifying the skin and increasing the flow of blood to relaxation and relieving aches and pains, the list is almost endless.

The choice of high-end steam shower cabins is amazing from single cubicles to twin pods that are specifically created to accommodate two people easily. Or if you prefer to have the option of either showering or bathing you can opt for a steam shower bath which features all the elements as the steam shower unit but with an additional whirlpool bath within the base of the cubicle.

Once installed the steam shower is easy to maintain and looked after correctly will provide hours of enjoyment for you and your family for years.

On Court Radio at 7 am Sunday: A Criminal Law Guide with Special ...

R. Seth Williams, Philadelphia?s district attorney, will appear live on the weekly ?Court Radio? show at 7 a.m. Sunday to discuss the city?s recent efforts and initiatives to fight violent crime involving firearms.

The program will discuss criminal law and some of the basic things that citizens need to know about the system of criminal justice in the Delaware Valley.

One of the topics Williams will discuss is the city?s new reward program that aims to pay citizens substantial cash rewards of $20,000 to provide information that leads to the arrest and conviction of criminals who commit murder with a firearm in the commission of a crime in the City of Philadelphia. The reward program was announced in January by city Mayor Michael Nutter, Police Commissioner Charles H. Ramsey and Williams in a joint effort to stem the rising homicide rate here, according to a story in The Philadelphia Inquirer. There were 30 homicides in Philadelphia as of Jan. 25, which was ?significantly higher than the 15 or 16 that had been considered typical for that month in previous years,? the story reported.

In addition, anyone who reports another person who is illegally carrying a firearm in the city can earn a $500 reward upon the arrest and conviction of the suspect for a firearms violation, Williams said.

The live Court Radio broadcast will be hosted by MyPhillyLawyer managing partner, Dean Weitzman, and his co-host and fellow attorney, David Rapoport.

Court Radio is broadcast live every Sunday morning on Philadelphia?s WRNB 100.3 FM, with a simulcast on Magic 95.9 FM in Baltimore. You can also listen live on the Internet at WRNB 100.3 or on Magic 95.9 via streaming audio.

In an interview, Williams said he will talk about how the reward program is going so far, though it will be six to 12 months before any real results can be measured. ?I know that people have called in and that information on guns used in violent crime has already come in,? he said. But because cases take some time to go through the court system, no convictions have yet occurred where rewards have been paid out.

Williams said he will also detail another upcoming initiative ? a plan to ask the courts to forbid a suspect in a case involving firearms to be released from jail after simply signing a note promising to return for trial. That practice, where suspects are released on their own recognizance (ROR), is outmoded today when gun violence is so prevalent and it must be changed, Williams said.

?I will be asking for only cash bail for all defendants who are arrested for possession of a firearm,? he said.

Also joining the criminal law program will be Larry Greenberg, a Baltimore attorney who will discuss the criminal justice system and its operation, including the recent case of a former University of Virginia lacrosse player, George Huguely V, 24, who was convicted last week of second-degree murder in the 2010 death of his former girlfriend.

The jury in the widely-publicized Virginia case ?decided [that] Huguely did not plan to kill his onetime girlfriend Yeardley Love on May 2, 2010, when he kicked through her bedroom door, shook her violently, wrestled with her and left her bloodied in her bed,? according to a story in The Washington Post. ?The 22-year-old was found dead by a roommate hours later.?

Greenberg will discuss the differences between first-degree and second-degree murder charges, as well as detail manslaughter charges. ?Prosecutors had sought a first-degree murder conviction, while Huguely?s attorneys were hoping for the lesser charge of manslaughter,? according to the Washington Post story.

Williams is serving his first term as the city?s District Attorney, having been elected in 2009 as the city?s and Commonwealth?s first African-American district attorney. He earned his law degree from Georgetown University and his bachelor?s degree from Penn State University. He joined the DA?s office after law school as an assistant DA, where he created and led the Repeat Offenders Unit with the goal of reducing the high percentage of crimes committed by repeat offenders, according to his city biography. His extensive trial experience includes 37 jury trials, more than 1,500 bench trials and more than 2,500 felony preliminary hearings.

In 2005 Seth was appointed Inspector General of the City of Philadelphia and worked to investigate all allegations of corruption, fraud, waste, abuse and employee misconduct among municipal workers and companies doing business with the city. He left that post in 2008 to work for a Center City law firm before running for District Attorney.? Williams and his wife live in West Philadelphia and have three daughters.

Greenberg earned his law degree from the University of Baltimore and his bachelor?s degree in Sociology and Political Science from Boston University. He is the vice president of the Maryland Association for Justice, where he is an active member of the Board of Governors. He is also a member of the American Bar Association, American Association for Justice, Maryland State Bar Association, Bar Association of Baltimore City and the Maryland Criminal Defense Attorneys? Association. Greenberg is a Captain and Legal Officer JAG of the Maryland Defense Force where he provides legal support for the Maryland Army National Guard and the Maryland Air National Guard. Iran's Nukes - Harvard to Host Conference Calling for an End to Israel

It is shocking, but perhaps not surprising. On Saturday and Sunday, March 3 and 4, Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government will host a conference entitled "One State Conference: Israel/Palestine and the One-State Solution." The goal of the conference is "to expand the range of academic debate on this issue. Thus, our main goal is to educate ourselves and others about the possible contours of a one-state solution and the challenges that stand in the way of its realization." Notice how delicately it is put: "to expand the range..." To be sure, this conference will discuss ending the State of Israel. Nothing more and nothing less. A so-called "one state" solution means the end of Jewish sovereignty in Israel. Harvard knows it. Anybody with a brain knows it. The only question is, how has it come this far?

Caroline Glick argues that the academic elite is now leading the charge of Jew-hatred. Consider the long list of "professors" who will be speaking at the conference. My sense is that the reason the Holocaust was more successful in killing Jews on a genocidal scale than say the Russian czars' pogroms is because the Holocaust was fueled from above - from elitist anti-Semitism and elitist xenophobia. It wasn't the feudal lords who organized the murder machine. Those lords just let their Cossacks murder couple hundred Jews to get their bloodlust satisfied for the year. Most of the surviving Jews were permitted to pack their suitcases and run away.

The Holocaust was different. It wasn't the peasant class or their landed gentry lords that instigated the crime. And the Holocaust wasn't perpetrated principally to satisfy their taste for Jewish blood. In the decades before the Holocaust, an evil wind blew through academia and other elite quarters throughout the Western world. The doctrines of race and eugenics became all the rage of the anointed intellectuals. Even an otherwise liberal thinker like Oliver Wendell Holmes was drawn to the fashionable concept of killing mentally disabled in the name of eugenics. These doctrines gave the German intellectuals the philosophical underpinning for their so-called "anti-Semitism." That itself was a pseudo-scientific term for regular old Jew hating just like "anti-Zionism" is a progressive, politically correct term for regular old Jew hating today. That is, anti-Semitism was an elitist way of masking intolerance, even genocidal intolerance for Jews and making it socially acceptable to seek our annihilation. And this is the precise function that the term anti-Zionism serves today.

And here's Richard Baehr: University political activity feeds off identifying victim groups and fighting for their cause. The Palestinians are now in the upper tier of such groups. Some students may tune out the venom toward Israel that is routinely directed at them in far more classes than just Middle East studies or modern history. But others will absorb some of the toxin. It is not surprising that the graduates of America?s elite schools are far less sympathetic to Israel than graduates of other universities, and much less so than the rest of America?s adult population. In essence, anti-Zionism has become completely acceptable at the top of the academic ladder, and from there, over time, it has been and will continue to permeate the rest of mainstream society - in leftist churches and synagogues, and the mainstream media in particular. You cannot slander gays, women or Muslims, but Israelis have become fair game.

Ladies and gentlemen, you should be scared. When the nation's top university hosts a conference dedicated to discussing ways to wipe Israel off the map, well, Boston's Jews may be next.

Gerlad Burstyn writes for World Jewish Daily, from where this article is adapted.

He goes online and sees more anti-gay messages directed towards him. Overwhelmed by everything, he puts on a suit and tries to hang himself in his closet. I was in absolute shock. Even after everything he had done to Kurt, my heart broke for him. We learn that Dave’s father found him and he is in the hospital. On a side note, Max Adler was amazing tonight. Simply ahhh-mazing. The kids at McKinley can’t believe what has happened, especially Kurt, who feels responsible for not answering Karofsky’s texts or phone calls. How to earn a seat at the Oscars

Philippe Falardeau is the one getting all the headline-grabbing Oscar buzz 'round these parts, but he's not the only Montreal filmmaker up for an Academy Award this year. Patrick Doyon is also in the Oscar hunt and, in sharp contrast to the seasoned Falardeau, 32-year-old Doyon has been invited to the biggest show in the movie business with his very first professional film.

Doyon's beautiful nine-minute, 54-second meditation on childhood memories, titled Sunday, is nominated for the best-animated-short Academy Award. It's one of two National Film Board productions in the category, alongside Wild Life, an offbeat tale of a British fellow in Alberta in 1909 made by former Montrealers Wendy Tilby and Amanda Forbis.

In a recent interview at the fabled Caff? Italia in Little Italy, Doyon still sounded a little taken aback that his film is headed to the Oscars.

He found out about the nomination at around 8: 40 the morning of Jan. 24, right as the Oscar nominations were being unveiled. He was in front of the computer with his girlfriend and their 2?-year-old daughter, and it was a pretty intense moment.

"We were real happy," said Doyon. "We were shouting, we were so happy. But my daughter didn't understand and she started crying.

"We knew since the beginning of December that we were on the 10-film short list (for best animated short)," Doyon added. "In fact, both films from the NFB were on the short list. I was pretty sure one of the two NFB films would be nominated. I had seen the 10 films in Los Angeles in January, and I felt our two films deserved to be on the nomination list."

Doyon had made one film prior to Sunday, but the animated short Square Roots is not considered a fully professional film because it was made as part of Hothouse, the NFB's apprentice program for emerging filmmakers, back in 2006. That one took three months to make.

Sunday, on the other hand, is the fruit of two years of full-time work at the NFB studios in St. Laurent. What's cool about the film is that it doesn't look anything like the mainstream animated flicks produced by Hollywood giants like Pixar and DreamWorks - movies where the latest software is used to make the animation look as real as possible.

Doyon actually sketched all of the original drawings on paper using regular pencils, working on a slanted luminous table. The result was 15 boxes overflowing with sheets of his sketches. Then he scanned all of them onto the computer, colourized them and began editing.

"Technically, it's not a film that revolutionizes animation," said Doyon, who is also in the midst of providing drawings for a kids' book titled Le voleur de sandwich.

"But that wasn't my goal. For my first film, I really just wanted the film to work as a story. It's really kind of classic animation. The goal of an animated film is to get away from reality. The danger of computerized animation is to recreate reality, which is of no interest to me."

Doyon's film tells the story of a young boy who goes to his grandparents' house in a small town after church on a Sunday morning. Bored with the adult world, he wanders out to the nearby train tracks to fool around. Doyon says it's inspired by his own life growing up in the small town of Desbiens in the Lac St. Jean region.

"But it's not an autobiographical film," said Doyon. "My memories are exaggerated and transformed. It's a way of making a film about boredom without it being boring for the viewers."

Shortly after our interview, Doyon headed to California, where he's set to spend almost two weeks. All of the filmmakers nominated in the animated-short category are invited to tour the Pixar and Dream-Works animation facilities in the San Francisco area, and then it's off to Los Angeles, where Doyon has a jam-packed agenda.

It's all a bit of a shock for a quiet, unassuming guy who's more used to working on his animation or drawing magazine illustrations alone in his studio.

"I certainly wasn't thinking of the Oscars while I was making the film, and I can't expect that every time," said Doyon.

Sunday is part of a program of Oscar-nominated shorts that screens nightly at 8: 30 through Thursday at Cin?ma du Parc, 3575 Parc Ave. It also screens as part of a Rendez-vous du cin?ma qu?b?cois program Thursday at 9: 30 p.m. at the NFB Cinema, 1564 St. Denis St. You can also watch it on YouTube; search "Patrick Doyon Sunday."

The 84th Annual Academy Awards are broadcast live Sunday at 8: 30 p.m. on ABC and CTV.

Be strategic about matching employees' 401(k) dollars ? Business ...

Maybe your company has always offered a 100% match on the first 2% of income that an employee contributes to a qualified retirement plan like a 401(k).

But this practice might result in a good outcome for your employees. How about offering to contribute a 25% match to the first 8% that each employee defers to his or her account? It will cost your company the same while encouraging employees to save more. It might even move some nonparticipants off the fence. ?

Note: Anti-discrimination rules can restrict contributions of highly paid employees, like the owners of the company. Therefore, it may be in your personal best interest to encourage higher contributions by the rank-and-file.

(AP) ? Clapping hands and swaying to gospel hymns in the church where Whitney Houston's powerful voice once wowed her congregation, the biggest names in entertainment sang along with the choir to remember the pop superstar at her hometown funeral Saturday.

"We are here today, hearts broken but yet with God's strength we celebrate the life of Whitney Houston," the Rev. Joe A. Carter told the packed New Hope Baptist Church after the choir behind him sang "The Lord is My Shepherd."

Mourners including singer Jennifer Hudson and Houston's mother, gospel singer Cissy Houston, stood, swayed and clapped along in the aisles as gospel singers BeBe Winans and the Rev. Kim Burrell joined with pop stars like Alicia Keys in paying tribute to the 48-year-old pop superstar who first began singing in the Newark church.

"You wait for a voice like that for a lifetime," said music mogul Clive Davis, who shepherded Houston's career for decades.

Others were more mournful; singer Ray J., who spent time with Houston during her last days, broke down crying. His sister, singer Brandy, put her arm around him. Cissy Houston and Houston's daughter, 18-year-old Bobbi Kristina, clutched each other in the front of the row.

Actor Kevin Costner, her co-star in "The Bodyguard" that spawned her greatest hit, remembered a movie star who was uncertain of her own fame, who "still wondered, 'Am I good enough? Am I pretty enough? Will they like me?'"

"It was the burden that made her great and the part that caused her to stumble in the end," Costner said.

Filmmaker Tyler Perry praised Houston's "grace that kept on carrying her all the way through, the same grace led her all the way to the top of the charts. She sang for presidents."

Stevie Wonder and Oprah Winfrey were among the biggest names gathered to mourn Houston, along with Hudson, Monica, Brandy and Jordin Sparks ? representing a generation of big-voiced young singers who grew up emulating her. Houston's voice, a recording of "I Will Always Love You," was to close the funeral.

Houston's cousin Dionne Warwick presided over the funeral, introducing speakers and singers and offering short comments about Houston between them.

Houston's mother was helped by two people on either side of her as she walked in and sat with her granddaughter and other family to begin the service. Houston's ex-husband, Bobby Brown, briefly appeared at her funeral, walking to the casket, touching it and walking out. Security guards said Brown was upset that he would have to sit separately from the people he arrived with, and left. A Brown representative didn't immediately comment.

Mourners fell quiet as three police officers escorted Houston's casket, draped with white roses and purple lilies. White-robed choir members began to fill the pews on the podium. As the band played softly, the choir sang in a hushed voice, "Whitney, Whitney, Whitney."

Close family friend Aretha Franklin, whom Houston lovingly called "Aunt Ree," had been expected to sing at the service, but she was too ill to attend. Franklin said in an email to The Associated Press that she had been up most of the night with leg spasms and sent best wishes to the family. "May God bless and keep them all," she wrote.

A program featuring a picture of Houston looking skyward read "Celebrating the life of Whitney Elizabeth Houston, a child of God." Pictures of Houston as a baby, with her mother and daughter filled the program.

"I never told you that when you were born, the Holy Spirit told me that you would not be with me long," Cissy Houston wrote her daughter in a letter published in the program. "And I thank God for the beautiful flower he allowed me to raise and cherish for 48 years."

"Rest, my baby girl in peace," the letter ends, signed "mommie."

The service marks one week after Houston, one of music's all-time biggest stars, was found dead in a Beverly Hills hotel in California. A cause of death has yet to be determined.

To the world, Houston was the pop queen with the perfect voice, the dazzling diva with regal beauty, a troubled superstar suffering from addiction and, finally, another victim of the dark side of fame.

To her family and friends, she was just "Nippy." A nickname given to Houston when she was a child, it stuck with her through adulthood and, later, would become the name of one of her companies. To them, she was a sister, a friend, a daughter, and a mother.

"She always had the edge," the Rev. Jesse Jackson said outside church Saturday. "You can tell when some kids have what we call a special anointing. Aretha had that when she was 14. ... Whitney cultivated that and took it to a very high level."

A few fans gathered Saturday morning hours before the service as close as they could get to the church, some from as far away as Washington, D.C., and Miami. Bobby Brooks said he came from Washington "just to be among the rest of the fans."

"Just to celebrate her life, not just her death," said Brooks, "just to sing and dance with the people that love her."

Others were more entrepreneurial, setting up card tables to sell silk-screened T-shirts with Houston's image and her CDs. But only the invited would get close to the church; streets were closed to the public for blocks in every direction. But their presence was felt around the church, with a huge shrine of heart-shaped balloons and personal messages that covered the street corner around the church entrance.

Houston's death marked the final chapter for the superstar whose fall from grace while shocking was years in the making. Houston had her first No. 1 hit by the time she was 22, followed by a flurry of No. 1 songs and multi-platinum records.

Over her career, she sold more than 50 million records in the United States alone. Her voice, an ideal blend of power, grace and beauty, made classics out of songs like "Saving All My Love For You," ''I Will Always Love You," ''The Greatest Love of All" and "I'm Every Woman." Her six Grammys were only a fraction of her many awards.

But amid the fame, a turbulent marriage to Brown and her addiction to drugs tarnished her image. She became a woman falling apart in front of the world.

Her last album, "I Look To You," debuted on the top of the charts when it was released in 2009 with strong sales, but didn't have the staying power of her previous records. A tour the next year was doomed by cancellations because of illness and sub-par performances.

Still, a comeback was ahead: She was to star in the remake of the movie "Sparkle" and was working on new music. Her family, friends and hard-core fans were hopeful.

The funeral is for invited guests only. Houston is to be buried next to her father, John Houston, in nearby Westfield, N.J.
